Has anyone had a standered front sight that was so hard to remove that you just ground it down into a low profile gas block so you could get you free float rail over the top of it? I have a front sight block that isnt budging I have tried everything taper pins are stuck heating it .. solvents everything it will not come off.. I want it off so I can put a rail over the top of it and remove the sight.. Should I just grind it down to a low profile so my extended rail fits?

Sp what do ya do about the handguard cap since its to big to fit under the rail system and the gas block has to come off for the cap to come off..

When I removed a stubborn FSB from my AK, I made relief cuts in the FSB where it wraps around the barrel––just be careful not to cut through the FSB and into the barrel; just deep enough to weaken the steel.  After making the cuts, I was able to knock off the FSB with a rubber mallet.

EDIT:  if you have a lot of time and a few cutting wheels, you can make relief cuts under where the pins are on the bottom side of the barrel.  with the metal supporting the pins cut, they should come right out.

What rail do you have?  I couldn't get mine off either but I had no other option because the Daniel Defense RIS II uses a proprietary barrel nut and a "bolt-up plate," neither of which fits over a gas block of any kind.

It took a lot of effort and frustration and finally a 4lb sledge with a 1/4 inch steel punch and a quick prayer that I wouldn't crush my hand.  I set the upper on it's side between two 2x4's and swung that sledge as absolutely hard as I possibly could.  I hit the punch square and popped the pin out, I swear I even saw some smoke come off that sucker!  Second pin was much the same, a prayer and a swing.

I have a MI Free Float its the extended carbine length so it will go over the gas block  by about 3 inches.. Its the kind where you just cut off the delta ring and it clamps around the existing barrel nut to make it free floating..

Go for it.

I've found on FSB pins if I clamp the barrel in a vise the pins just fall out, or if you have acess to a arbor press.

Piece of cake.  I actually prefer the standard FSB cut down to fit over (bolt-on) gas blocks.  Here's one I chopped for a friend, and it came out very nice.  I just cut it down, shaped, deburred, and refinished using Brownell's Aluma-Hyde 2.  You should have no trouble adding the MI FF rail, just cut the delta ring off and install will be a breeze.

This technique is also very useful if you have a permattached flash hider. Works great, just make sure you grind down enough material for it to fit under the rail.

That seems a bit goofy to me. If you bought it new, you should try to exchange it for a mid or rifle length rail before you mount it. Otherwise just get those pins out. Not that looks really matter, but an fsb handguard without an fsb is kind if pointless.

Third option- you could cut off the entire fsb and run a flip up.

I actually got the rail for free cause a friend was switching over toa DD FF... This is gonna go on my bushy just because I like my rail further  out for when I use my Magpul Forward angled grip... I have a scope in this gun so iron sights really arent needed.. Its more of my coyote gun. Just figured its free so mine as well put it on and get rid of those ugly carbine handguards..

Actually, don't those have a removable bottom so you don't need to pull the FSB anyway?

Guys it's a normal rail. He needs to grind it down or it won't work at all. The hand guard cap is a bitch though

Did you try the freezer yet?

yeah i froze it too.. I tried all the things i could think of shortof cutting it off..And yes its a normal rail.. no sections are removable. just a top and bottom that attatches to the delta rins via clamping around it..I guess the handgurad cap will be cut too and slowly cleaned up ..

To cut the handguard cap I used a cutting wheel and split both sides, then used some pliers to "break" it off.  Pretty easy to do, take your time, and tape off the barrel to prevent scratching it.
