there is something i am not too clear on..
if a sight is not F marked and is .04" shorter.. why does one need a taller post? or does one need a taller post? what keeps me from raising my front sight post using a sight tool? very curious. |

The M16 and AR15 rifles with a fixed carry handle have a rear sight that is that much lower as well. I'm guessing when they came up with the removeable carry handle idea in the 80's, it was difficult to get enough room under the handle for our big, meaty man-hands to fit through, so they made it a little higher and added a taller sight base that was easily recognizable for use on flat-top upper receivers. You can back the front sight out enough of a standard base to meet the required height, but it does have to come out quite a bit.
Another reason (less likely, I think) would be further refinements to the rifle the coincided with the idea of the flat-top. Soldiers may have been asking for a taller sight that fit there shooting style better. |
| You don't necessarily need a taller FSP all the time in this instance. Your best bet is to try & zero to determine if you need one or not. If it zeros without a taller FSP then you are g2g. If it doesn't then you can buy the taller example & try again. I've been able to get non-F height FSBs to zero using various rear buis & carry handles with no issues. |
| As Warpig said, there are BUIS that are actually designed to work with non-F-maked FSBs. Bushmaster comes to mind. I don't remember if they are cataloged different, but I know Bushmaster makes or made a carry handle that was cut shorter where the rear sight is since they generally don't use F-marked FSBs. Bushmaster (again), also sells taller front sight posts. And sometimes regular FSPs in a regular FSB will zero just fine with a BUIS made for an F-marked FSB. Best thing to do is test what you have first, then buy as needed if needed. |
