I have an early 90s model HBAR, that I bought new, that has been a safe queen for many years.  I pulled it out last weekend and shot it, it worked well, and yesterday I cleaned it up and found this buffer in the A2 stock.  This thing is 3 inches long and "rattles" like there something loose in it.  According to some of the postings that I see this is not an HBAR buffer.  So, what is it?

HBAR refers to the barrel. Your buffer, if your rifle has a standard A2 buttstock, should look like this:

What brand is your rifle?

It's a Colt HBAR, and the buffer you show should be in my HBAR A2 stock, that's why I'm confused as to what this black buffer is.

After digging through the "AR Parts box" I found the correct buffer.  Somehow, years ago, I must have incorrectly installed the wrong buffer.  This smaller buffer must have been from a collapsable M4 stock.  Mystery solved.

This must have been something I did 16+ years ago when I put this in storage and I just didn't remember what I did.  Moral of the story, don't store anything in a wrong way because you never know when you're gonna get back to it.
