I am a complete newb when it comes to the AR, but am interesdted in the build it yourself concept. I like having hobbies.
Based upon my research it seems that the PSA chambered in 223 wylde and in stainless may be slightly more accurate.
This gun will be for plinking, some light hunting, and an introduction into the AR.
Also, good to have just in case SHTF.

Which would you pick for your first AR?

Get both??

I think the Spikes is the safe choice, but I also think the PSA build won't do you wrong either.  I guess it would depend on if you're willing to drop the extra bucks.  I would prefer a 5.56 chamber, but I've had no experience with the Wylde.

Wylde chamber is fine might even be better for precision shooting and it will shoot 5.56 and .223.  If you are interested in building,  then I'd build.  Have a plan, which you do, and don't deviate half way through.  You can always change it later if you desire.  I only build my own unless I find a super deal on a used piece.  You will need a few tools which will add to initial costs of rifle/carbine but I've assembled over 30 AR's for myself and friends and are still using the same tools I originally bought.  Not like they are only good for one time use and I could probably sell them used for more than I paid for them easy but they also cost a lot more now than what I paid back in the day.  Good luck on your decision.  Nothing wrong with the Spikes and I've been looking at the middy myself.  I already have 5 carbines and would like to stay married.  Be careful,  building AR's is very addictive!

I would build your own, you can get basic kits in whatever profile you want from J&T Distributing for about $500 then add the parts you want to your specs. Model1Sales has mixed feedback and are a little more expensive.

If you decide to go with J&T just call them cause there website sucks, but they have about anything you could want as far as a kit goes. The uppers are already assembled, so all you have to do is put together your LPK and snap on the upper.  The Double Star products they sell are top notch and so is there customer service.

Add another 2-3 weeks onto the Spikes then reevaluate.

I'd do the PSA build.  You can always buy the Spike's upper later.
