| Im about to order a rifle kit from Del-Ton and I can't decide, Dissipator or 20'' M16A2 style. Anyone with more experience have any input as to what would make a better first AR? For this first build all i know is that id like to keep it simple with nothing more than a bipod and foregrip. Not sure about optics either. What kind of range can an average shooter get accurately with iron sights on an A2 upper? Any advice would be helpful |

If i were you and this was my first AR, I would look for a 16" carbine or middy with a flat top receiver and a carry handle. Learn how to shoot the rifle, how it functions and how to use the irons. You will be fine at 100 yards.
Once your comfortable with it, decide what you want to change, like throwing some an aimpoint or eotech on it. I personally dont see the point in a bipod on a 16" rifle, especially a delton. It's probably not going to be a tack driver anyways, so its probably best to learn proper stance and technique first. As for a vfg, thats personal preference. See if you like it without it first. Another big thing is obviously money. You mention a delton, which presumably means you dont want to spend a lot. Delton has ridiculous wait times right now, so order early if that where your thinking about ordering. If i were getting a simple first rifle and not looking to spend an arm and a leg, here's what i would do: Palmetto state armory has the MOE lower build kits for $125 w/ ar15.com coupon code here Palmetto state lower for $80 Stag Model 2h upper with carry handle for $500 here Just my opinion |
| Thanks for the links. The only thing i see there for the uppers though is the 20''. Im not completely without experience, a friend of mine has a base model S&W M&P15 carbine. And the shorter handguards just really aren't for me. They feel cramped and impossible to stay steady with. Anyone know where i can get a Dissy upper maybe? I find myself straying farther from my original plan of something closer to an M16A1, but that can change as long as i end up with something that im going to stay happy with. The more suggestions and knowledge the merrier |
| I just found 2 good rifle kits from J&T Distributing for only about 30 bucks more than the Del-Ton kits. Is J&T Distributing a sister company to Double Star or something? Same logo as the Double Star Lower I just bought. Anyone know if these J&T kits are quality? |
