Hello all I’m new to this site and would like to get your opinion. I waiting on my tax refund and plan to purchase a new AR, I have about $1400.00 to spend. In your opinion what the best bang for the buck right out of the box? Thanks! |

What are going to be the main uses of the AR? Are you wanting a varmint rig, carbine for HD etc..? Are you wanting to run an optic? If so, is it included in your $1400 price range?
Bravo Company Machine (BCM) BravoCompanyUSA Spikes Tactical Daniel Defense LMT Colt maybe a bare bones Noveske varmint rifles : White Oak, RRA Predator Pursuit, BCM ss410 uppers |

Home defense using a Vortex red dot (already purchased) and a cheap laser, also purchasing a scope for fun, not sure if I’ll have the money for the scope yet If you're using it for home defense I'd look at one of the 14.5 inch guns with a pinned flashider. It's the smallest package you can get without having to go through NFA stuff. ETA: I would also save my money and not get a laser... That money would be better spent on a light imo. But thats up to you. |

Buy the best colt, BCM, Spikes, Daniel Defense, Noveske, LMT, Larue. Fixed it for you OP, for 1400$ you can have a bangin rifle and a nice optic. I would probably sell the Vortex (it's a nice budget sight, but for your budget you can definitely afford to upgrade) and put that money towards another optic. Here are MY recommendations (keep in mind there are plenty of great setups out there, this is just one that I happen to like alot). Upper For the upper, you might want to upgrade to the SAR rail instead of the BAR rail (the SAR rail is 4oz. lighter––that's a pretty significant weight savings), however you will have to call Spikes to special order this. The cost isn't that much more than the upper with the BAR rail. Lower For "stock option", I like the Magpul CTR. For "grip option", I like the Magpul MOE. For that entire rifle, you're looking at between 1000$ and 1100$, depending on the options you choose for the lower. Remember that the "ARFCOM" coupon code gets you 5% off your entire order, so be sure to consider that in your calculations. Then for the optic I'd probably check out the new Aimpoint PRO, although no one seems to have them in stock right now. I would also check out the Eotech, and while the reticle is very intuitive the battery life leaves alot to be desired when compared to the Aimpoints (Eotech battery life is still good, just nowhere close to Aimpoints). I would say that the battery life is probably more important than the minor practical difference between the reticles, so I would probably opt for an Aimpoint (and this is coming from an Eotech owner). In any case, there are good deals to be found on both Aimpoints and Eotechs, so just look around a little. As for a weapon light, I am a firm believer in the Streamlight TLR-1. It's lightweight, low-profile, affordable (~100$), and comes with an integrated mount. It's also brighter than most weapon lights in its price range. And ditch the laser. Having a red dot/holographic sights completely eliminates the need for a laser, since both of those sights are designed to be used with both eyes open. |

I have a hard time placing some of these suggestions in the "best bang for the buck" category. If you just want to spend $1400, you can easily do so and get a very nice weapon, but Spikes looks to be the only one mentioned that meets the "best bang for the buck" criteria. Odds are that once you start sorting out your weapon you'll want to change this or that or buy various & assorted accessories. If you get a Spikes (or other decent brand; S&W, RRA?) you'll have money left to do that.
I would add that if you think you'll ever sell it, get a Colt. |
