I confirmed that you can use a V7 Weapon Systems receiver plate on a PWS 416 gen 1 receiver extension. The alignment screw ends up going right in to the QD socket on the V7 plate. All I had to do was file off the alignment tab on the inside of the V7 receiver plate. That was worth about .6 ounces of weight.
I reassembled my lightweight last night. I tried to get it painted, but that just wasn't going to happen in a timely manner. My goal was never to aim strictly for a lightweight rifle. My goal was to put top shelf parts on a build that has the accessories I want without weighing a ton. In the end, I'm in the low 6 pound range. Just finished two builds, the 204 Ruger (18" WC) came in at 5.2 pounds and the 556 came in at 3.16 pounds.
Complete 556 upper 2.278 pounds or 36.45 ounces, total weight right now is 3.16 pounds. Have to get to 48 ounces to be @ 3 pounds. Think I can get a lighter muzzle brake, a lighter CF handguard and a lighter pistol grip. Maybe a lighter buffer too. Upper: Polymer upper receiver @ 4.10 ounces Titanium brake @ 1.2 oz. Faxon Ultra light weight 556 1:7 twist 16 inch mid length barrel. @ 19.4 ounces Whiskey Arms lite carrier 3.91 ounces Rubber City adjustable carrier key bolt+ titanium firing pin+ cam pin + 2.04 ounces (BCG 5.95 oz.) At 7lbs 2oz empty, I thought I was doing OK with my build.
14.5" GP pencil barrel / samson foreend. Nothing too slick. I knew it would come in a touch heavier than a DI gun with the piston stuff and thicker gas block. But after seeing some weights achieved on here with 16" carbines, I'm getting itchy to figure out how to get my rifle into the upper 5lbs range without spending a car payment :) |

BA 16" mid length pencil barrel

I'm amazed at some of the weights shown on this thread. Very nice builds!
May not be the place for this question...... Got to thinking it would be fun to graph how cost per ounce of a rifle goes up (Exponentially) as the weight hits a certain point and goes down. I would bet cost per ounce really starts to jump once you drop below 6 lbs on a build. |

That's really a very good question. I'm currently assembling a lightweight and it's seemingly ended up costing dollars per gram of weight savings on the small parts. I didn't actually calculate the cost yet, but it has crossed my mind as dollars per gram. I didn't want to go "full retard" anal on the cost. A quick example: a Tripwire lightweight charging handle costs $65.00 plus tax and shipping (We'll use $5.00). For 70.00 you get your TLW handle and it weighs 1.0oz./28.0g. An Aim surplus charging handle costs $15.95 plus the $5 there you get a std. mil-spec charging handle for $20.95. It weighs about 31-32 grams. In this case the Tripwire handle costs $49.05 more than the plain standard handle, and you saved 4 grams maximum. You have to weigh them they are all within a range of about a gram on handles. You traded $49.05 dollars for 4 grams of weight savings. That' is a cost of $12.26 per gram. A little high. I'm not going to figure the cost of my rifle that way for a total dollar amount spent per gram saved or cost. This is a one-time, one shot, make it how I want it, don't cut any corners or get in a hurry build. I don't know if I'm going to be able to make it run right. When the one I'm doing is finished I will post pictures, the weight, the cost and a supplier/thanks to list. -CB
