Hey guys, I am getting around 1000$ back for federal tax refund and want to know what you guys would do if you were in my shoes.

Here is my AR15

http://i839.photobucket.com/albums/zz313/dstyer90/AR-15/M15.jpg

Would you spend money on upgrades such as, gas piston kits, optics, etc?

Would you sell this AR and use the money from both to get a new one, .308 cal etc?

Or would you use it for something else entirely?

Just want to gather some ideas, thanks guys.

Id use it to build my own from the ground up.  Then i would realize that i have no use for the factory one and strip it and sell off the parts and use the stripped lower leftover to build another one with a different role.

I'd take a class and then once you have some firsthand experience with what works and what doesn't work you can make your decisions rather than relying on people on the internet telling you what to buy.

I am not relying on your opinion, simply asking for it. Thanks.

Think of it this way... classes are a lot of fun, and you'll be more proficient with whatever setup you end up with. Also, in a class there will be a bunch of other guys with ARs of all different setups. People are usually happy to let you check out their gear and maybe even fire a few rounds. So, not only do you get some good training, but you have the opportunity to see and maybe even try out a whole bunch of different gear firsthand.

With what you have now, plus a sling and a few mags and some ammo you would be set for a basic class.

Market_Garden's advice isn't bad but I'd start a little simpler. What don't you like about your current rifle? A gas piston probably isn't the best way to spend 1/3 of your money, IMO.

Here's one suggestion.....

At Botachtactical.com  use discount code: magpul

Matech Rear Sight $69 (or find one in EE for around $40)
Magpul PMAG MagLevel 30rd $13.80 x 3 = $41.40
Magpul MS2 Sling = $37.96
Magpul MIAD Grip = $27.32
Magpul RSA Sling Attachment = $22.76 (will need to add a rail for that)
ISH Ambi Sling Plate = $9.95

Total at Botach = $209.15 plus approx $10-15 shipping Grand Total around $220ish

Order seperately at Botach using the code: eotech for 25% off.
Eotech 553 Holosight = $486.75 plus approx $10 shipping for a total of $496.75

That makes your Grand Total $720.90 and leaves $280ish to get ammo, a weaponlight, or whatever (or maybe fix what looks to be the lack of a flash hider???).

Buy an Aimpoint, a VCAS or VTAC sling, some ammo, and enroll in a class.

Now that you have a carbine I would get a Trijicon RX30 w Larue mount for it and then use the rest to start a precision rifle build.

3000 rounds of Federal XM193.

I am liking all the suggestions, thanks guys!

One quick question though. if I were to get an optic, is there some kind of riser mount I could use so my rear iron sight wouldnt obstruct my view? Or would I just have to replace it with a flip up?

Thanks,

If you run an Aimpoint or Eotech, you could get a mount from LaRue that leaves the iron in the bottom 1/3 of the optic.  I prefer flip up rear sights though.

How do you like the weight of your rifle?  If it were me, I may look into a lighter barrel or second LW rifle.

The weight is pretty good, around 8lbs without a loaded mag. Those are bathroom scale numbers though haha.

And someone earlier asked what I don't like about my rifle.

Well, there really isn't anything I don't like lol, just looking on ways to improve it, or add to it.

Or maybe just buy 3000 rounds like one guy said.

I would get an Aimpoint CompM2 new for the warranty with the 2 MOA dot, a decent quick release mount from the equipment exchange, 500+ rounds of m193 or m855, and I've never done a course but they seem fun so spend the rest on that.

ETA - Also some PMags

The absolute worse advice you could possibly follow is to spend money at Botactical.  Check the BBB rating of this horrid company if you need farther explanation.

Personally I spend $500 on a quality optic such as an Aimpoint or Burris XTR .   Purchase a magpul mbus for around $40 used.  a sling at $40.  Spend the remaining on ammunition.

Show us where you can match those prices please??

FWIW, every order I have placed thru Botach (6 or so in last 60 days) has been sent in a timely manner and was exactly exactly I ordered..with prices no one else could come close to.

Feel free to spend full retail elsewhere if you like, personally I call that very bad advice, unless of course you were born with a BIG trust fund :-).

Not a big trust fund.  Simply a moderate amount of intelligence combined with ambition and some luck ;)  .

Check the BBB rating of this company.  Isn't worse the risk.  And like I said giving a company this poor money is only enabling them.  You have gotten lucky but ultimately it's a matter of time.  Good customer service is a diminishing quality.  People who would rather cheap out and save $5-10 are the reason for this.  Because it then becomes excusable.

Id buy a trijicon acog.  And remove the broom handle from your handguard.

Worst thing you could do is buy a piston kit.

Take your G and buy a whole new rifle.

Ammo, sling, NHMTG mags, thread barrel & add Phantom, replace rear sight if it is a UTG/Leapers...keep rear sight if it is LMT, Rock River Arms, or the like.
Put some in savings, don't blow it all. AR15s will nickel & dime you to the grave.

Yeah I was looking at those ACOG sights, would eat up my whole budget but from what I hear it would be worth it.

Broom handle? You mean the verticle fore grip?

So far I have never had a problem ordering from Botach, but YMMV. Right now G&R Tactical is having a sale on a bunch of Magpul stuff if you want to get some extra toys and dress up your rifle

Eotech, ammo, and some mags, or get some headers for my car! hehe(that would take all I had and then some).

Stuff the $ under your mattress.    I'm serious.
You you had to spend it buy ammo.
