I'm visiting from the Dark Side of the site, where Century Arms AK are considered (and proven) dubious at best.  Are they any better over here?  I have a friend who has an opportunity to buy a Century AR and 200 rds for $500.  Said the owner only put 250 rounds down the barrel and is getting ready to be deployed and wants to shed some weight.

Are there good receivers and bad receivers like there are on AKs?  What to look for in Century ARs?  Canted sights, mag wobble?  Any common problems.

Thanks for any help.

for $500 bucks?

eh...

what are the exact specs?

Is the lower forged?
Commercial or milspec size buffer tube?
chromelined barrel? not?
m4 feedramps?
barrel material?
BCG? factory or some other company?

i mean.. $500 is a solid price for a rifle... but i really don't think many people will have experience with that particular brand when there are so many better options out there.

give some more info to us... maybe a picture or 3.

Century's ARs are made from typically obviously used parts.  I would not expect them to perform well.  You can get a WELL made, all-new AR for not much more than $500 from reputable companies like High Standard.  Go to about $800 and you have a very broad assortment of "definitely not built from a used parts bin" rifles to choose from.

Century ARs are not any better than their AKs, but they are pretty obvious in that, where some Century AKs are actually "OK."

I bought one for 500 during the Obama scare. It was short stroking and the dealer could not sale it. I changed out the buffer spring and it ran 100% of the time. It is used parts that show some use but it was a damn good gun for me. I sold it at a gun show 6mos. after I bought it for 900. and I had shot about 1200 rds with out a hiccup. I would say buy it but you can find newer "name brand" guns if you just save a little bit more.

Century builds their rifles with surplus Colt M16 parts (upper receiver, BCG, LPK), so in that respect, I guess you can say you'd be getting quality parts.

I held one of these not knowing what it was and why it was so cheap........until I saw the name Century!  Those things are rough! A1 hand guards and all!

+1 and their lower receivers are quality parts made by CMT.

as far as I can tell, the best thing to do with a Century rifle is to take it apart and put it back together. After that, they run. I'd suggest he buy one, completely disassemble, replace the springs, and then reassemble. They are made of quality parts, but assembled by people who worry about quantity, not quality, and probably are just following a very basic "do this, then this, then this" set of instructions.

I purchased a one of their A2 style C-15's from a local gunshop during the election period.  BCG/Upper had Colt markings.  BCG looked kinda rough but the gun runs great and shoots better then I can.   I actually ended up disassembling it and using the lower portion on an carbine build later on,  thousands of rounds through that carbine and no issues with the original century assembled trigger group or lower.   I'm now left with the used Colt upper that i'll probably end up matching to an RRA lower to make another A2.

Final thoughts?   I'm a lot happier with my C-15 then I ever was with some other LARGE brand name AR's that have had various build quality and reliability issues right out of the box.  For $500 i'd say for it.

I'd buy it.  More like $400ish without the added ammo. No where are you going to get a little used complete AR for that price.
