Can I put an A1 handguard on this the way it is?
I have an A1 H/G coming in the mail, but this is the first time I removed the handguard from my rifle, and it doesnt look like it will work.
Its a RRA NM rifle. The front cap looked like it would work, but now seeing the heastsheild or whatever it is, Im not sure.

Nope, not enough space inside the handguards for that. Looks like a free float tube to me.

Makes sense that its a free float tube. So the sling is attached to the tube, not the barrel.
Duh. Brain fart.
Thanks. Ive had this for a while, I just never took it apart, or any upper for that matter.

A DCM setup that is great for accuracy, but not as great for the retro look.

It's a muffler.  Didn't you read the post?

You could always remove the Free Float tube. I think there were about $100.00 with the specially bent gas tube. It would be considerably lighter but you would lose your front sling swivel as it's welded to the float tube.

Since they're already ordered you may as well try when they arrive. I f your A2 fit seems likely that the A1 will fit also, or be made to fit by removing a little material.

but now seeing the heastsheild or whatever it is, Im not sure.

he didnt state exactly what it was that was covering the barrel and not the gas tube

DCM free float handguards use standard handguards with the heatshields removed.  A1 handguards should fit as well, but will need to be modified like the A2s that I presume were on it.

It is a freefloat tube that allows standard handguards to be used once the heat shields are removed.

These are used for highpower rifle competitions in the Service Rifle catagory  where the rifle must retain a look "As issued".

Here it is with the A2 handguards.
The A2 guards have no heat shield in them because the free float tube.
Will I be able to remove the A1 heat shields without breaking the plastic outer shell?

This is an old pic of it.

You can get the heatshields out but they are held in with litte (microscopic) twist rivets and getting a grip on them is a PITA!

So I should be able to grind them off then?
How sturdy is an A1 guard? Never handled one before.

Very beautiful rifle!

You should be able to grind down the little plastic studs that hold the heatshields in place, then pull them out. A1 handguards are pretty stiff, so don't worry about cracking them in the process.

I'll be getting the guards in todays mail, so I'll post when I attempt this.
Thanks for all the replies.
