| Hey everyone. im brand new here. first post and first build. i bought a rock river lower and after doing research on the different uppers i have (for now anyway) kind of narrowed my choices down to RRA or spikes. Can someone help me make my decision. The prices seem to be comparable. I guess you'll need to know. The lower is a 556 and im building an m4 profile. 16" carbine. oh. tomorrow at the local gun show i will be looking at purchasing a magpul stock. 1 other question- moe or ctr? i see the ctr is a little more expensive and I was wondering why. Thanks in advance, i love this site- and plan to hang around here for future builds. |

The CTR has two features that the MOE does not: A friction lock that can be engaged for additional tightness on the receiver extension and quick-detach sling swivel mounts. I have a CTR, but the MOEs that I've handled haven't seemed worse off for want of the friction lock.
I would personally purchase Spike's before RRA. The quality of materials used in the Spike's is superior in some ways to the RRA. |
| Spikes...I busted a CTR stock in a class when I whacked the stock on its friction lock against a barrier and it just came apart..it was a lot of force but it is a part thats exposed to possible damage.MOEs are great I have one as well and although not as tight as CTR its more damage resistant.I have a VLTOR MODSTOCK mil-spec tube..I love it it has the sling swivel built in and was $50 from BCM and I believe they still have some on clearance. It has 2 storage compartments and its angled for a better cheek weld. For what the CTR stock costs you can get the mod stock assembly for around the same price by getting the stock then the tube and rest of the parts seperately. |

Welcome aboard.
Rock River is damn good, Spikes is even gooder with a higher grade bbl., not that you'll need it. If you want to have a pure RRA it might have better resale as people that don't follow the forum may want a carbine of one make. The RRA M4, as in an 16" Tactical Entry, will be a heavy bbl. under the handguards, the Spike is Gov. profile. I would go with the CTR vs. the MOE. On a RRA lower it will be a 'commercial' which you can tell by a thicker recoil pad. Now that I have a pure RRA in my stable I would personally go with the Spikes upper. It comes with a heavier, full auto bolt carrier, I believe. |
| thanks everyone. Im definitely going to go with the spikes. Ive heard nothing but good things about them. the moe stock will probably be my choice as well- I dont mind a little "looseness" in a rifle. some of the govt issued colts that ive shot are really loose and they still functioned even when they were filled with sand and dirt. at some point ill post pics, and im sure ill have more questions. happy new year. |
| good choice on the spikes, if your getting the moe you should also check out the LARUE RISR |

Having owned both and still have some Spikes. The RRA's are good acurate shooters but are less mill spec and have no FA bolt or MP test marks. The Spikes is the best deal going IMO and mine have been totally flawless.
I use Moe stock kits which come with the buffer tube and they have a tight fit so there's no need for the lock. It's also much cheaper to buy the complete kits for $99 shipped and sell off what you don't need (or use it all rather than piece by piece). Just make sure you know if you have a commercial or mill spec buffer tube if just buying the stock fit can very if not a MP tube. |
