Anybody have any idea of what fair market value is on these. I'm looking at picking one up from a guy. It's a 78 year of manufacture, by the serial number SP1007XX
Has the triangle handguards, rifle stock, 20 pencil barrel, no brass deflector, and no forward assist. Appears to be accurate for the year of manufacture and appears to be in very good condition. Owner stated that he has had the rifle for 20+years and my guess is that he is the original owner. He's looking a $1000 price tag and I have the possibility of trading a Savage rifle for this. Any thoughts or comments.
Thanks Jason

$1000 seems to be a fair ballpark figure

if you're a collector then yes, go for it.  if you plan on buying it to shoot or modify in any way then it is a waste of money and time.  i've had the chance to buy a couple examples of these over the years, and i've passed every time because i only have shooters in my gun safe, and taking a mint SP1 and shooting it would be devaluing it to any other collector.

Thats a good price If in good shape. If it has been shot it will not loose any more value by shooting it some more.

$1000 is a fair price for a SP1 that has been shot.
I have bought one as cheap as $750 and paid as much as $1200.
Don't worry about de-valuing it by shooting it, its a rifle that's meant to be shot and enjoyed.

I've never owned a Colt AR type rifle, so I wasn't sure. I did some searchs on gunbroker and found that there were several listed in that price range, above and below as well. I'm tempted to make this trade and then flip this rifle, but I'm not sure. I may end up keeping it if I do the deal! Appreciate the information guys. I estimate that the gun is probably 80-90% condition or better from the photo's that I got from the owner. Book value shows it to be in the $1400 neighborhood at that point, but I'm no expert on rating a gun. Thanks for the help, Jason

At 80-90% condition, you should be able to pick it up for less.

Saw a minty SP-1 in a gunshop today for significantly more.  I built an A1 clone for significantly less, but that wasn't yesterday.
There are more out there.
Agree that shooting it a bit won't hurt the value.

I see minty ones around here sell for $1,000-1,200 and we are high priced. If it is clean I would jump on it.

I have a super clean low mile 1978 (5 digit) and still shoot it. (Shoots good BTW) $1.000 is good if it correct and clean. Check it over good, there is some info in the retro section. If you don't have AR's then buy a nice "shooter" like a Spikes and save $$$.

your not going to make much flipping it. $1000 is what its worth in good shape. don't modify it or you will make it a $700 gun and people will hate you. buy to keep there a great rifle.

Until you get down in the low 4 digit serial # range, they are just a curiosity.  For $1,000 it should be perfect with original box and papers.

Got a 1966 in the safe. FIL bought it ages ago when they were they only thing available. He shot it. And I shoot it. That is why people bought these things. They are cool. Kinda like driving a 55 Chevy cool. But the only way I would spend a grand or more is if it was unfired in the original box. And than I would be too tempted to shoot it and destroy it's collector value. If you buy it enjoy it. It's already been shot. I would not buy it to change it around. Be prepared if you buy it for all the Vietnam vets who will stop by to look at it when you bring it to the range. Mine with the 3 prong flash hider always gets fondled by someone who carried one in country.

I own 3 SP-1's. I got them much cheaper back in the day but that price would be fair if it was in like new but fired condition. If it is used and fired with some handling marks I would offer $750 and go as high as $850 if i really wanted it. As the others have said you can shoot them and not devalue if you keep in good shape but I would not purchase it as a regular shooter.
