Is the zero going to shift on a aimpoint or eotech red dot sight when going from a .22 conversion to a regular .223/5.56 chamber?

What has been your experience?

Thanks,
Sonny

no personal experience but im going to say yes.

and it is gonna vary from rifle to rifle based on barrel length/twist rate/conversion kit/ammo... mostly ammo

Yep ........ going to be way off.

Yes lots of variables.

Got one rifle zero'd at 100yrds with an Eo-tech.
With a Spikes drop in converstion it is the same at 50ydrs but I have not shot it out to 100.
That is this one rifle. it could and most likely will be different with another.

Not as much as you might expect.  I have one that I can't tell much difference in at all, and the barrel is a 1/8.

The one I tried in mine was actually just a little off at 50yds. Just be aware they aren't going to be tack drivers.

From personal experience

xm177 clone, ceiner kit, Rem. golden bullets - tiny groups at 25 meters but 3" below .223 groups

A4 clone, ceiner kit, Rem. golden bullets - quarter sized groups at 25 meters but 2" low and 1.5" to the right of the .223 groups

A4 clone, CMMG kit, Fed. bulk - quarter sized groups at 25 meters, 2" low and 2" to the left

as stated above, rifle and bullet/type/brand dependent - try yours and see

I've been running a CMMG drop in kit in a 16" 1:9 barrel.  At 25 meters the 22lr poi was consistently about one inch low and two inches to the right.

Zero will be off, but not enough to change for training purposes. If you have an A2 site, play with the elevation adjustment and figure out where it needs to be set for the difference between 5.56 and .22

Hard to argue about the conversions from a cost-effectiveness standpoint, but there are some concerns.
-different zero, tho' you may be able to live with that; the variation doesn't seem to be huge
-barrel/gas tube fouling; not sure how much of a problem it really  is, but posters here have raised the issue.

With those two problems, many here (me included) have gone to stand alone .22s (S&W 15-22) or dedicated .22rf uppers.
Something to think about.

My CMMG conversion was 4" low and 2.5" to the right. but shoots minute of beer can out to 100 yards.
The Conversion has seven 550 federal packs through it plus some Remington golden crap and has been ultra reliable.

If you shoot 22lr through an optic zeroed for .223, you will see some drop inside 50 yards and a significant drop outside 50.  At 100 yards, you will be hitting so low it may not even be on the paper.  This is because 22lr is just under 3x slower than .223 but over half it's weight.  Therefore, 22lr will drop much more quickly.  I have observed this with both drop in conversion kits and dedicated 22lr uppers.  Barrel length and twist is also not enough to accelerate 22lr to match the trajectory of .223 (at about 3200ft/s).   So realistically, the kind of set-up you have really won't solve the problem.  It's simply an inherent difference in trajectories of the two rounds.  That being said, you could theoretically "get away" with using your optic zeroed for .223, while using a 22lr conversion kit, as long as you stayed within 50 yards max.  It just depends on the level of precision you want.  Keep in mind, a 22lr conversion will never produce consistent bullet trajectory since you are trying to get a 22lr bullet to travel down a .223 barrel which is marginally to large for it.  To have the most consistent twist rate and trajectory on a 22lr bullet, you need a 22 barrel.

i have have been feeding my delton with 22lr via a cmmg drop in kit. I zeroed the irons (plastics? they are magpul sights) to the 22lr and then i mounted an aimpoint m4s and zeroed it for 5.56. so i just plink around with the iron sights with the 22lr since it is usually at a distance less than 50 meters. then if a switch over to 5.56 i slap on the aimpoint and am gtg.

Thanks folks for the input and insight.

Someday I will be building a dedicated .22lr upper. That will most likely be my next gun related project. But till then it's my old Ceiner kit. I love mine, it still runs well and is accurate enough for it's intended purpose. I have only 1 upper that I run it through, a 1:9 14.5 M4 type. It shoots about 3" low and about 1-2" right at 25yds shooting .22lr Federal bulk packs when zeroed for 5.56 . I find it curious that people here are using Rem Golden Bullets; I have not been able to get them to function in my kit. I have an Aimpoint on a QD mount that I keep zeroed for 5.56 and remove from the carbine for .22 shooting. My irons are set for the .22 at 25 yds. In a pinch if I'm forced to use my irons in a real scenario they'll be accurate enough at practical distances if an unlikely failure of the Aimpoint. After a bunch of .22 iron shooting I remount the AP, confirm zero and blow out the fouling with a couple of full power mags. I always lube the bolt / lugs well when reinstalling the regular BCG after .22 and shoot it until it stops smoking like a filthy dirty .22lr gun. Then clean as normal. I'm considering one of the inexpensive Aimpoint type optics to keep dedicated for the .22lr and just having it in advance of the dedicated upper. Hard to commit funds to it when the irons practice seems so practical and it's so intuitive when going back the RD anyway though.

Have Fun. Merry Christmas !!
