I have narrowed my Choices of 308 AR systems to the following. I have looked at and held all of them except one. I have shot a few examples but not all of them. Here they are in no specific order:
1. KAC SR-25 emc....I like the full ambi controls 2. Larue OBR - not full ambi, but can be modded to do so. 3. LWRC REPR - Heavy but exudes quality, also not ambi controls but can be made so 4. LMT MWS - The one piece upper throws me off a bit, other than that it is nice 5. AR-10a2bsn, match barrel, match trigger and customized to match other guns. Either GAP or Accurate in Colorado to do the work Some of my non factors are price, magazine availability, piston vs DI and battle proven. The only gun on this list that is battle proven is the SR-25, but that is not such a big concern for me. So if the above factors are removed and you can have any one of these which would it be. |

I know someone who just dumped a SR25 EMC in favor of an OBR. Personally, of that list I'd pick the MWS, the OBR or a GAP built rifle would be my second choice. any reason why he dumped the EMC for an OBR? Did he tell you why. This definitely interests me because I have heard that the new EMC is an amazing piece. |
| I have the SR-25 and LWRC REPR. Like them both a lot. I also have the matching 5.56 items (SR-15 and M6A3). I guess it boils down to whether you like piston or DI operating systems. When given a choice, take both. As a lefty, I appreciate the KAC ambi touches. I plan to add them to the LWRC's. |

This definitely interests me because I have heard that the new EMC is an amazing piece. It was kind of a messy situation, and I don't want to say too much and upset anyone. Basically the EMC was a dog from day 1, it just didn't run. Various ammo was tried, different magazines, parts were swapped back and forth with a known-good EMC, and this poor gun just didn't want to work. The gun was back at KAC for a bit too, and it still didn't get fixed. I know that there are EMCs out there that do run, but this whole episode really didn't impress me much, and knowing there are guns like the OBR and MWS out there for a lot less money, I'd be hard pressed to justify a KAC. |
My vote goes for the N6

well, I think I have pulled the trigger so to speak. Thanks all. I should have the gun in a few weeks. All of the above choices are just to good and I would love to own them all, but that is just not in the cards for me. The finalists where SR-25, OBR, MWS. All have excellent rep, top of the line reliability and all shoot moa or under, which meet my needs.
I excluded the OBR for several reasons. I do not like the 20 moa rail. I do not like the fact that I have to have a cheek riser on my stock so I can look through a scope. I do not like the fact that with the cheek riser on a sopmod stock you can't pull the charging handle back when the stock is collapsed. I am a lefty. I don't like the fact that for a custom gun, Larue won't install an ambi safety or mag release, which in my opinion is inexcusable in 2010. I can of course have it done aftermarket, ambi safety and mag release for a combined $180 plus labor to install or approx $230. This puts me at almost $1k more than the MWS. Whatever the case, these were all things I could not ignore. To bad, because it is a beauty. SR-25. I have talked to several people who use them currently in the military. They love them. The gun is fully ambi. I handled two. Price is my only gripe. I am sure it is well worth it as it has many proprietary evolutions that make it a cut above the rest, but I doubt for my purposes I will ever notice it. LMT MWS. This is the one I picked. IT does everything the other two do, is fully ambi, and is the lowest price. I even spoke to a KAC collector and he indicated that the MWS closely follows the previous gen SR-25 in every way. One added advantage is quick change barrels. Not sure how sold I am on the 1 piece upper/rail system, but it feels ok. And aside from the SR-25 it is the only 308 AR in military service beating out the HK417 and the SCAR to get the contract. The other deciding factor is that LMT has an excellent reputation in the industry and has been around longer than most high end manufacturers. Not to say that KAC hasn't, since they both have been around for just about as long. thanks all for input in this and my other thread. |
