Hello all...first post here!

While quite experienced with firearms, I have never owned an AR-15, and am prepared to jump in. Use will be general plinking...home defense  is handled by Mossberg, but of course, Ill want it at my side in case of zombie attacks.

Ive done a LOT of research, and know I need certain things. Here is my current configuration;

Chamber: 5.56 X 45mm
Barrel: 16", Chromed
Buttstock: 6 position DS-4
Bipod: None
Upper: Flattop
Front Sight: Forged Front sight base
Rear Sight: Removable forged steel flip up
Handguard: CAR HG
Bolt Carrier: Standard
Charging Handle: Standard
Trigger group: Standard
Pistol Grip: Standard A2 or
Furniture Color: Black
Flash Hider: A2

And of course, upper and lower are forged.

I am looking at a  kit from Det Ton, however, they offer 3 different uppers, and I dont know the difference.

They offer an M4 carbine profile, a H-bar carbine profile, and a mid-length H-bar profile.

Can someone explain the difference between the 3, and even better, guide me to some pics.

Also, any advice/pointers are welcome as well.

Thanks!

The carbine M4 profile is a 16 incher with the M203 cutout toward the front.  It has a carbine length gas system, which will result in slightly more violent recoil impulse than a mid-length.   The handguards are generally 7 inches

The middy has a mid-length (slightly longer) gas system, which reduces recoil and helps you keep sights on target.  The barrel will not have the M203 cutout.  The handguards are 9 inches, I believe.

HBAR means heavy barrel.  You don't have the same countours as the other two, which will increase the weight of the barrel.

I'm sure I'm missing something, but this is the gist of it.

A google image search for AR-15 carbine, mid-length and HBAR, should show you the differences.

Delton is good gear... GREAT for a first rifle...

It's what I started on, and that Rifle is still running, even with the DPMS stripped lower receiver ;)

the HBAR is heavy... seriously... I'd suggest either getting the m4 carbine profile, or the Midlength and have the barrel turned down by ADCO...

For ~$550, it's hard to beat that for a complete quality rifle...

I prefer the Mid-length gas systems even on 16 inch barrels.
Get a heavy barrel....there's no reason why your plinker should be sub-MOA or very close to it...and you
aren't going to carry it for long patrols....
So the Midlength gas HBAR profile would be my pick......and a 1x8 twist barrel for the heavier bullets like
the 75s and 77s.

Check here for good description of the options in AR barrels.

The carbine length gas systems are much harder on the bolt IMO.
