Alright guys, I got a question for all you guys out there.  Before I go any further, I dont want to turn this into a "X brand is better than Y brand because of..."  Just looking for some input on DPMS because I have no prior experience with them.

Alright, I am in the process of buying a Colt 6921 with ACOG.  Pretty much exact clone of what I carried over seas and it what I hold dear to my heart.  With that said, I will now have a S&W M&P15T that will be collecting dust.  I was thinking of trading off to a DPMS MK12.  I like the idea of having mid range precicion rifle (not trying to shoot the balls off a fly at 500yds though) on hand that is the same cal. that I buy most my ammunition.  I can trade up to within $200 or so that I will dig into my pocket for.

Only thing is that I have not heard much about the MK12 anywhere.  And I am wondering if that alone is my answer.  Have yet to hear reviews, so is it junk?  I dont wanna take anything away from DPMS.  In fact, I think the MK12 is a very nice looking rifle and sounds to me to have the components of a good rifle.  Other option is getting a Colt Match target and turning it into some what a SAM-R clone.  Like I said, dont care to invest $2K on the rifle itself, just something that will hold 1.5moa or so within 600yds.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My main concerns, are DPMS bolts MP tested? Do they have deep M4 feed ramps?  How good are their barrels, MK12 barrel in particular?  Everything else is gravy to me I guess, but every bit of infor will help.  So I will greatly appreciate all of your responses.  Thanks for your time...

That's what I'd say about the MK12. You can get far better parts for the same price.

Its not going to be a rifle that you'd want to drop into the sandbox with, but DPMS makes pretty accurate rifles.

If accuracy is what your looking for on the budget... its not bad.

Drop the DPMS BCG though... or at least put a BCM upgraded extractor kit on it.

But honestly... i dont know what the price point your looking at is on that one... but if you researched a bit more you could probably have a better rifle for equal or less.

Its a buyers market right now, you have  TON of options... and really there is no reason to go with DPMS right now unless you want to get into .308.

I have a DPMS Mk12 barrel waiting for some other parts so I can call it a rifle.  The barrel has M4 cuts.

That said, M4 cuts are unnecessary for a semi-auto.

I've used their lowers for 7 different builds, and they've been great! Zero problems, finish is still holding up well. Great lowers. Thats about all I know about them.

I've run 4-5K through mine with average cleanning and mine has been great, no hiccups at all.
Just apply lube ad shoot. I will look at DPMS when I build again.

One thing to think of is they seem to sell alot of their barrels at a heavy contour.

Thanks guys!!!  I really apprecieate all the help.  I have yet to decide on what to do, but I really like that SPR Profile.  I may just keep the Smitty, and change out the barrel, and get a rifle lenght FF rail system on it.  Or maybe just look at BCM which has also caught my eye but a little more pricey than what I am looking for right now.  Alright fellers, thanks for the help.

I have a DPMS AP4 and it has been a good rifle, one thing that I don't like is that they use an A2 style FSB instead of the correct Mil-spec F marked FSB like Colt and others use with a flat top upper.

I am not going to pretend that I am even half as knowledgeable as some of the members of this board. I can only speak of my own experience, I have two DPMSs and both have gone bang each and every time I have pulled the trigger (several 2000+ X’S.) Dollar for dollar I think they are really hard to beat in terms of quality and getting what you pay for. I have put mine up against some of the M&P’s and custom builds and gotten considerably better groups of the bench…but yet again, I’m no expert and I don’t know how well the others were maintained or taken care of.

I’ve called them quite a few times asking questions about changing and upgrading parts and so far the CS has been topnotch.

Best of luck!

I have that Smith that I thnk I'm going to part with only bc I am going to a Colt 6921 accompanied by a Trijicon RCO.  I want the Smith to fund most of the next rifle if not all of it.  As for the MK12, I am going to look into it a little more before I jump in on it.  Don't need a Centurion Arms SPR, although they are really nice.  Like I said, I have no plans on employing the weapon in a real life or death situation.  More than anything.. I want an SPR at a decent price that will hold about 1.5MOA, no FTF, good bolt and trigger.  Any ideas on who to look at for best bang for the buck.  About $1300 price range?

Why not keep the Smith, buy the DPMS barrel, FFR, some armorers tools, a vise and DIY? My Smith had a decent BCG and swapping butt stocks is simple.

4 different brands of .223 out of a 14.5 dpms 1/9 M4gery.  yeah, dpms fixed the problem, it just went into the rear of the safe after i got it back.  POS IMO

I thought about doing that as well, but for the money it would be cheaper to get another rifle.  KAC Rifle Lenght FFR $350 (and thats if I could even find one); SS 1/8 Barrel $250; LMT Stock $250, and I have on idea what it would cost to get the feed ramps done on my upper...  Then again, I have yet to really look into it. I may just do that and sell off the spare parts that I have after project to ease the dent in pocket book.

I don't think it's an ammo problem.  Looking at the two cases in the middle, it appears to be an out-of-spec chamber.  It appears, about 3/8" from the extractor groove, that the chamber is way too wide/large.  Brass can only stretch so much before it breaks.

Some types of brass/ammo are better than others (A-Merc being some of the worst), and brass that has been reloaded many times can weaken, resulting in splits.  But given the noticeable bulge in the body of the case, I doubt different ammo would have fixed the situation.

DPMS like most everyone else turns out some screw up's they "might" even turn out more than others no way to really know this.

They are in my buy it if it's dirt cheap category because they have little resale value /might have problems.

I picked up one of their 1/8 twist 16" bull brl varmint uppers "cheap" it's accuracy is outstanding it's also heavy as hell

Depends on where you try to sell it.  Sell it on the EE?  Yeah, DPMS gets no love.  Sell it at a pawn shop, gun shop, or the local gun show?  You'll probably get more for a DPMS than a BCM since BCM is relatively unknown by most gun folks.

In most retail setting DPMS rifles aren't any cheaper than guns with better specs.

By all reliable accounts Smith is turning out a better rifle than DPMS.

Skip the DPMS.

There are plenty of people who are happy with their DPMS rifles...

...but they may not use them as much as people who own other brands.

Then again, they may not need or want to. And that's fine. But that doesn't mean that it's the right one for you to buy.

I have not had good luck with the DPMS components that I bought (this, too, doesn't mean that DPMS is NOT the right one for you to buy).

That said - I have found that when it comes to barrels, you get what you pay for.

I don't know how much that DPMS MK12 actually sells for beyond the $1600 "sale" price tag on their website, but I think your money would be better spent elsewhere.

I have an DPMS sweet sixteen with a  Leupold mark AR 4x 12 that has never failed to function period.
heavy stainless bull barrel, a2 stock, free float HG.
Ammo that functions fine:
Federal wall mart bulk packs 55gr
hornady tap training 55 gr
silver bear 62 gr hollow point
Tula 55 gr fmj
pmc 55 gr
CCMG 22lr adapter, federal .22 bulk

So far no fte or jams of any kind.
rifle is .223 1/9 twist.

I am not saying this rifle is the best choice of all but it has been very good so far.
A better trigger is next.

good luck!

I own a DPMS AP4, I'm happy with it.  I'm not MIL or LE.  I have shot a little more than 1500 rds with it since 2007.  Side by side comparison with a Del-Ton kit I put together(Aero-Precision lower) ; the Del-ton is a little more accurate with repeatability on groups.  I have put between 500 and 600 rounds through it.  The DPMS is an M4gery and the Del-Ton is an A2 Middy.  For my money and use, the DPMS and Del-Ton are just fine.  I would buy a S&W, too.  Mid priced is about where I'm at on the food chain.

I have been using all sorts of DPMS parts in my (numerous) builds for the last 15+ years with no problems.  I can't even remember how long they have been around.  Their rifle parts are a good value.

i had a dpms ap4 carbine for a very long time, it was actually more accurate then my BCM with same barrel length, although, it had a 1/9 barrel and I always shoot cheaper ammo. Honestly, if its not going to be a partol gun or seeing combat, I'd go for it.

The only bad thing about the gun was the BCG, it wasn't chrome lined, so it was a bitch to clean after a few thousand rounds.

I built a DPMS rifle with a Fixed Carry Handle Upper, A2 Sights and 11.5" Heavy Contour Barrel.  I used a standard A2 Grip, Carbine Handguard and Stock.  All DPMS.  Nothing fancy.  It strikes center mass at 100 yards consistantly and reliably.

My DPMS is a very good rifle at a great price.  I wouldn't hesitate to grab it if I thought I would need to use a firearm.

Nice group.

I generally shoot offhand with the A2 sights (though I am considering a TA01) so I'm confident with my rifle out to 100 yards.

I've found nothing wrong with DPMS products. However, I have had several frustrating times when dealing with them directly. I try to get their parts from other sources when possible.

I would actually just buy a 16" match barrel to put in your existing gun and sell the assy.  At least keep the lower, sell the upper and build a recce type.  mk12 are badass, but recce will do everything the 12 can out to 6 or 700 yds.

Thanks for all the input guys, I am really torn about what to so about my project.  I already ordered m y Colt and ACOG RCO, so I am pretty stoked about that!!!  Nonetheless, I would like to have that mid-range rifle that can get me to about 600.  Why???  No real ryhme or reason, just want the capability.  I don't think that a SHTF sit will arise, but I guess I want to have the tools on hand just in case.  As for the RECCE, I like em, but I'm am really fixed on getting an SPR.  I just thought that a MK12 would be an easy way to go considering I would only have shell out another $275 for her if I can sell me Smitty for $1K even.  Anyway. I am going to keep researching the market.  I may just turn my Smitty into a SPR.  Change out the barrel, FFRAS, and presto!!!  Alright, I will keep checking on this thread for more information.  Thanks to all you guys out there for all the input.  It really helps.
