The reason for the brownells vice block and the thingie that goes inside the upper is to keep the upper completely supported both inside and out. It's very easy to crush or twist an upper when using a vice or torque wrench with no support device to keep everything where it's supposed to be. |

I completely agree, that's why I *at least* used a torque wrench. The hacker in me would have just tightened her up until the gas hole aligned

Hey, if it works, cool! I've assembled a 5.56 free floated upper with nothing more than my legs(vice ), fancy channel locks, a punch, and a tack hammer, no fancy barrel wrench or vice blocks. It runs perfectly, probably to the surprise of many out there!
