On all my M4's I run a auto carrier, a "H" buffer and a heavy extractor spring with a black bumper. I pretty much shoot Federal M193, which I know is a fairly warm load. On the last few factory built M4's I have looked at the manufacturers use a Carbine buffer and a lighter extractor spring with a blue bumper. Do manufacturers do this so the guns can run more differant brands of ammo that may be loaded on the "Cooler" side? Am I doing this right?
Also I recently purchased a Stag upper and noticed no M4 feed ramps. Are they neccessary or just "Nice to have" Thank You for the advice in advance. |

The carbine buffer, standard spring, etc, work, but it's not the best and they do it to save $.50. Also, I haven't had any issues with my stag upper. The M4 ramps are nice to have but as long as your gun is working properly (including a quality mag), you shouldn't need them. |

The M4 feed ramps are only needed on full auto M4s. Semi auto they don't really help anything at all.
The black insert only shows the different spring that was originally used in the M4 because of it's more violent extraction. The Army has since gone to the stronger spring and black insert for it's M16 rifles as well. The heavier buffer is a step above a nice to have. The light weight "carbine" buffers have only steel and not tungsten weights, and steel is quite a bit cheaper. H1 should probably really be the standard as with some rounds the bolt can be moving too fast to reliably strip the next round from the bag. Do a search for the videos someone posted showing different weight buffers and how they worked at preventing bolt bounce. |
