As a Western New Yorker, I've done my share of small game (Marlin 880SS) and deer hunting (an old Sears 12ga).  I'd like to start hunting coyotes and have always wanted an AR, so I figured now would be a good time to start putting one together.  My goal is to have a carryable firearm capable of reaching out to coyotes.  Optimally, I would like to also be able to go plinking as well.

I already have a Rock River lower, so naturally I've been looking at the Predator Pursuit uppers in 16" and 20".  The price of either RRA is extremely reasonable (< $700 with options ), considering the SS barrel.

My fear, though, is that the 20" is going to be cumbersome, so I'm also considering the 18" BCM upper.  This upper would run me ~$890 shipped, but I would also have to buy a muzzle brake ($35 from RRA) and send it to get pinned by a gunsmith ($$$?).  That's almost $250 more than just going with an RRA.

And then I'm also thinking an 18" with a muzzle brake is not much shorter than a 20" without, so why bother?

I guess my main problem at this point is not knowing what distances I'll be shooting at.  I've read just about every thread in the small game hunting section and noticed that a good number of folks have settled on a 16" barrel.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

I just bought a BCM 16" barreled  middy with a 1/8 twist stainless barrel for about the same type weapon you are looking to build. The upper was $475 and I got the bolt, bolt carrier and charging handle too. Total price is right around $600. I will be using a Spikes lower and will have to add a buttstock and handguards. I am gonna scope it and use it for pretty much what you will.

I have never found anything longer than 16" needed here in the mountains.  Plus it's a little lighter to haul around.

Might want to take a look at these uppers.
Everything from 12" to 20" and quality stuff (I own an 18").

Look at the Bushmaster Varminter with fluted barrel. The 24" version weighs a little over 8 lbs sans scope. They also have a 20" version. Barrel isn't threaded for a flashider. They are accurate, light for it's class and balance well. They run less than $1200 for a complete rifle, about the same LaRue charges for just Stealth Upper. Shop around, sometimes you can find a good bargain
