| I am thinking of an a2 upper for the next project. I am curious of the "general" accuracy with open sights. I know every shooter is different but what kind of groups are you all shooting.....pics would be nice. Thanks |

The Marine Corps has started to use Acogs for Table 1 (known distance, 200,300,500yd) and table 2 (combat oriented) qualifications. None the less there are still a few units out there still using A2 style sights, and I'm pretty positive they're still using A2's in bootcamp. From what I've used in the Marine Corps (m16a2 w/irons, M16a4 with Acog, and M4 with Acog), I haven't really noticed a distinguishable change in accuracy on the KD range. I tend think that's because there are a few limiting factors involved, mostly ammunition. I usually print between a 2.5 and 3.5 MOA group on the slow fire courses of fire. I know for a fact that I shoot better than that, irons or not. I usually do between 1 and 2 MOA with my .308 bolt actions prone with a sling shooting handloads. I have a couple with scopes and one with Lyman precision iron sights and group only slightly better at 100yd with the scoped rifles. Also, I had an old M16 upper (pre- A1) on my AR at one point with the A1 style irons and with handloads it also shot in about the 1.5-2 MOA range.
All of that said, a new Ar15 with A2 sytle sights–– the accuracy depends on the barrel used, and how well you can line up the stick in the center of the hole and point them. As far as sights go, they're pretty good. I like M1/M14 sights better, but the A2 sights work probably just as well. I'd say if you know what you're doing, have the rifle on a bench with a standard grade A2 barrel, and decent comercial ammo you should be able to do 2-3MOA if you take youre time, better if you work at it. As always, match-grade ammo will shoot much better than M855 or WWB etc. |
| I have a Colt 20 inch A2 H-bar. Its scary accurate. Two friends, that have never shot an AR before hit a three inch bulls eye consistently at 200yards with 55grain PMC ammo from a bench, no shit. That is how accurate the rifle is. My groups were a tad better but its my rifle. Nothing fancy, all from the factory except the Zahal sling. |

Are you on the Marine shooting team? Because if you are able to hold 2.5-3.5 MOA on the slow fire portion of the course you are able to shoot better than most of the Scarlet and Gold team. |

Using factory Hornady 75HBPT match ammo I shot ~3.3MOA out of a rack grade M16 A2 at 200 yards. Ammo will make a larger contribution to the accuracy of given hardware No pics of the target but my score was 96/100 and the ten ring is 7 inches. I was shooting from the prone with a sling. Here is the rifle lol (complete with slightly rotating handguard and heavy trigger): http://www.danpassaro.com/img/s8/v10/p267946634-4.jpg http://www.danpassaro.com/img/s6/v6/p598622841-4.jpg That's awesome. |
