Could buy this:

Could buy this: ($970 + 20 shipping after rebate):

Or:

Build with this as a basis:

http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-S...m4-14socom.htm

Add a BCG from BCM at about $140 + Charging handle ($20) and I'm at about $550 for starters. I have hand guards and a pistol grip. If I buy an assembled lower, I can go cheap $170, or better (RRA-$240), or I can build a el cheapo setup. It can run as much as $910, or as little as $785 for the most basic M4 with a Daniel Defense fixed rear sight, el cheapo lower or $910 with the fuly adjustable LMT rear sight.

The Smith and the RRA are pretty much full tilt guns with all the cool stuff done. The BCM build will have the Milspec barrel and an M16 MCI bolt. I know all the purists love this, but tell me - is it worth it?

The RRA big downside is that the barrel is NOT chrome lined and I do believe that the feedramps are NOT M4 - which i understand is bad juju.

Also - I do like the fixed sight, and the RRA setup is very nice with the modded carry handle.

1. What would you do?

2. Are there REAL benefits I will see with the BCM barrel with 1:7 twist?

3. What is the best fixed rear sight for the money? DD has no elevation. LMT is pricey at $120.

4. I know the conventional wisdom is that the lower makes NO diff. Anyone disagree?

5.  Should I add Spike's???

As in any decisions, there is give and take.
The easy way out is buying a built rifle, and it is a viable option.
Building an AR from assemblies is just about as easy as buying a pre-built rifle. You save the 11% tax and spend that in parts,add-ons, ammo,etc...
Resale is usually better in a pre-built rifle and those who are not versed in our AR world are quicker to buy that "name" rifle. This is not a concern to me.
The BCM choice is one that you would never regret, yet you might never regret that RR rifle either.
What I decide is best on sights or optics should not have any affect on your decision, I don't like fixed rear sights on a battle rifle.
You have already thought this out mostly, it's your decision to make.
It's your money...

Edit––> or you could consider the Spikes LE-M4 middy built rifle...

I have only been a AR owner for eighteen months; I own two, a RRA and a High Standard.  I think you should buy your first and decide what you want on your next one.  As already stated, resale on a factory rifle is higher than a home build.  I have successfully rebuilt engines and transmissions, so I am not afraid to tear into an AR, but I still decided to buy factory the first go round.  The HS is a special edition made for a gun club I am a member of, or I might have either built or bought something different.

You can build a cheap flat-top for $540 using a DPMS lower and DPMS kit at JSE and it is a one make gun.
Save $40 by going Spikes or Aero lower.

I posted this suggestion on another board, ironically with the same upper that you're looking at:

With the summer sale prices, you can snap together a complete BCM rifle for about $900.

BCM complete "blem" lower with M4 stock: $270 + $15 shipping.
BCM standard 16" M4 SOCOM upper - $385 + $135 for BCG and CH option + $13.95 shipping.
BCM M4 hand guards - $22.95.
Magpul MBUS folding rear sight - $55.05.
Magpul PMAG, 30 rd mag - $14.20.

Total = $911.15 plus whatever your local FFL charges you for a transfer fee on the lower.

ETA: Note that Bravo includes the CH if you add the BCG option.  Basically, their Gunfighter CH is so popular that no one buys regular CH's from them anymore!
