Been an AK enthusiast for a long time but with the $600 S&W M&P AR special I had to buy one.   I have a expensive nice scope that is too big and hard to mount on my AK's,  so I plan on using the AR as an optics only SHTF gun in case I need shots out past the scopeless AK's range (150 to 400 yards.)    I don't think I will even buy sights for it.

The only thing that may interest me are free floated handguards as these could increase accuracy?  Now I plan on stocking up on the best surplus I can find so I reckon that will be the limiting factor,  so the free-floated hardguagrds may be a waste.

Anything else thats a must have besides a sling?

Which surplus ammo from ammoman or wilders would have the best accuracy with this 1/9 twist rifle ?

My SHTF is basic it has a two piece drop in rail with a VFG mounted and a light and sling ... although I was thinking about dropping an Aimpoint on it.

$600 M&P is a good deal.  Where did you come across that one?

This is a SHTF but kind of opposite.  I have AK's for handling less than 150 yards,  so for this I only need it for scope work out past the 150 yards.  So the only thing I can think of doing would be adding free-floated handguards simply because they may increase accuracy,  but with quality surplus ammo I doubt it?

So your looking for more of a varmint rig then and yes a free float will still improve your accuracy no matter what ammo you use, improvement is improvement either way.

get the sights magpuls cheap....better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them.

The Smith M&P is a nice rifle, especially at that price, but a varmint rifle?  I don't know about that, especially with "surplus" ammo.  There is no such thing as accurate, quality, surplus ammo.  With M193, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect 2 to 4 MOA groups at 100 yards.  My rifle stays closer to 2 to 3 MOA with Silver Bear 62gr hollow points.  Another limiting factor is going to be the trigger.  I really don't know that you'll even be able to achieve the 2 to 4 MOA with the stock trigger.  As for the free floating, you may or may not see much of a difference, depending a lot on your ability to shoot with the stock trigger.  Really you won't see much of a difference, unless you are putting stress on the barrel while shooting, like with a sling.  I just put a free float rifle tube on my 14.5" carbine. I think it was a DPMS tube.  I got it for around $30 from Midway, but of course, it stills needs to be installed.

If you want to make this rifle as precision as possible, I'd start with the trigger and some good ammo.  55gr V-Max is nice stuff.  Also the fifty something grain stuff from Black Hills.
