Hello, I was planning on starting a new build. But cannot decide which caliber I should use, 5.56 or .308? i plan on using a 20in. barrel and shooting at roughly 100yds. I would also like to use it as a SHTF rifle.

5.56mm has lower ammo costs, more parts availability, etc.

You said new build so does that mean you already have a 5.56 rifle? If so, then .308 is your choice. Along with .223, .308 is readily available at Wal-Mart, Dicks, etc..

If you are building in an ar platform than go with the 5.56/.223

I agree, why mix up the selection with different calibers, different mags etc... KISS and stay with 5.56. Just my .02 YMMV
