Could I take my 16in D.S. and put an 18in barrel in it to make it more like the SPR type rifles.  I was going to get an 18 SS barrel with the longer quad-rail.  Primary use is a paper puncher, but I want to make it as accurate as I can.

Sure you can.  If you're going to buy another barrel and new rail though I'd just get a new upper receiver as well then assemble a whole new upper.

While I fall into the "whole new upper" camp too, it can be significantly more expensive.

$90 for the receiver, $50-$200 for BUIS (triple that for optics), $15 for a gas tube, $20-$50 for a gas block, $20-$100 for a muzzle device, $150 for a BCG.

Then you either have to pay someone to assemble it, or buy the tools and DIY.
