I am building up a relatively lightweight AR-15 for my father. I snagged a S&W M&P15 from CDNN for $800, and they are including a set of flip-up BUIS...I think that is a pretty good deal, especially for his first foray into an AR. We want to keep it light, but functional. Please provide any feedback on the following list of modifications, and if you know of any great deals on parts please let me know! I know of a lot of options available out there, but the ever-growing accessories are overwhelming so I am hoping the community might be able to turn me on to anything I have missed.
Optic: This is not a high-cost build, so an economical yet trustworthy reddot is ideal. I do not know of a better bang/buck ratio than Primary Arms M4. I know there is cheaper options, but do not think they are reliable. http://www.primaryarms.com/product.sc?productId=35&categoryId=128 Handguard: Sticking with lightweight, I am thinking the best option is the Magpul MOE handguard. Then I can also get the illumination kit to attach a light which we already have. Is there any better or lighter option? http://store.magpul.com/product/MAG405/50 http://store.magpul.com/product/MAG402/111 Charging Handle: I am left handed, so I am very biased to the Badger tac-latch I have on my rifle. Is it worthwhile for a righty? If so, is it better to get the whole thing, or is it easy to just swap out the latch? It looks like there are a lot of very similar options out there, ~$20 for the latch and ~$40 for the whole handle...any recommendations? Grip: I like my ErgoGrip. He likes my ErgoGrip. Is there anything else out there that we should consider? Sling mount: He already has a Rocky Mountain Tactical sling, so I figure it is easiest just to get a sling mount and clip to match. https://www.rockymountaintactical.net/?page=shop/details&product_id=60 https://www.rockymountaintactical.net/?page=shop/details&product_id=13 Stock: I have a Magpul CTR, and am thinking about going to the ACS. I like the CTR, but do not know if it is worth the $100 for his rifle. Suggestions? http://store.magpul.com/product/MAG310/83 Anything you can offer to help would be great, especially if you know of good places to get all of this stuff. |

if youre going to go primary arms, why not the micro? Cool, I did not even know about the Micro; thanks! I will have to see if he has a preference. With his aging eyes, the 4MOA might even be better. Any recommendation between the Gen 2 and Gen 3 micro? http://www.primaryarms.com/product.sc?productId=303 http://www.primaryarms.com/product.sc?productId=304 |

Personally, I'd just get an add-a-rail kit for mounting whatever light I had to the standard hand guards, forget all the other parts replacements and spend the money on a used Aimpoint (pick a model) since cost is a factor. Later as I could afford to upgrade parts I would. Just my opinion. |

If you want light, then keep the CTR and not the ACS. If you really want light, consider swapping the barrel out for a light weight. He wants light; my rifle is a pig. The CTR is currently on my rifle, but I am wondering if it is worth it to put it on his and the ACS on mine...or just leave the original stock on there. |
