If I want to change the barrel on my Stag model 1 can I just switch it out or do I need to worry about crown ? I want to get rid of the 1:9 twist and go to 1:7. Thanks for any info. Stilleto

Your question doesn't make sense.

To remove the barrel you will either need to remove the front sight base or remove the gas tube.  What your question has to do with the barrel crown escapes me.

Thank you for replying to my barrel change question. I meant to ask what is barrel crown?  I was very distracted and my wording was off. Stilleto

That's the last point of contact between the barrel and the bullet.  When the crown is true and square, the trapped gas from the fired case escapes from around the bullet evenly and uniform in 360 degrees as the bullet exits the barrel.  With a damaged or non-true crown, the gas escapes slightly more/faster on one side or area around the bullet, which can adversely affect a bullets flight/performance.

ETA:  One reason NOT to clean a rifle barrel from the muzzle end is to avoid damaging the crown.  A damage free crown is a MUST for optimum accuracy.

WHY do you want to change to 1-7 twist? Most ammo is 55 to 62 grain and 1-9 is fine.

Maybe he wants to shoot 75 grain bullets.. Or maybe he would like to shoot some surplus M856.

Have you shot any heavier bullets with the 1/9? A couple of mine shoot 69gr fine, some 75gr fine. Haven't shot heavier with them or my 1/7 barrels. Some seem to shoot better than others, but I wouldn't necessarily write off a barrel unless it is warranted. It is your barrel and your decision though. 95% of my shooting is with my 1/9 barrels and lighter bullets, but that may change. Is good to have both if possible.
