So I have 4 full mags and 540 rounds in an ammo can. Is this a respectible amount? I can't afford to buy in bulk so i have just been buying brass and bullets a hundred at a time and reloading when I can afford.

I wouldn't worry so much about what you have stockpiled, I'd worry about how many classes you've taken, and the amount of training you've had. I'd rather go up against someone with no training and 10k rounds than someone with training and experience and 5 rounds, if you catch my drift.

While I don't think you can ever really have "too much" when it comes to quality ammo, we are all stuck with whatever our own personal finances will allow us to purchase. What Market Garden said is true.  Also, when you consider most classes require 1000+ rounds I would say just keep buying what you can, when you can, and get out there and train.

Also take into consideration that ammo is in some ways a good investment as prices are likely to only head in one direction, and whatever you buy today will most likely be worth more than what you payed several years down the road.

You do get some decent savings when buying in bulk, so maybe instead of buying 100 or so rounds a time you might consider saving up several hundred dollars and make a larger bulk purchase.

ETA:  I'm not sure by the wording of your first post if you only have 4 magazines, but you might also consider buying a few mags here and there as funds allow.  just my .02

My min rule is 100 handgun and 1000 rifle.

You're off to a great start.

Once BRD takes over those numbers skew up; see the amo section and the ammo forts

1K of .223/5.56 per rifle
1K 9mm
1K 45ACP
5K of .22lr at least.
200 rounds 00 12GA
and for other calibers a few hundred or whatever seems good enough.

Shit.....based on your numbers I'm fine....but with BRD I feel ammo 'pour'

Currently have: (board and count things when bored and waiting for my new rifle!)
1871 rounds of 5.56 with ZERO guns anymore and one on order
~1100 rounds of 9mm....~400 subsonic for silencer
~1000 rounds of .45acp with only a CCW gun I rarely shoot anymore
~12000 and dwindling .22 ammo
~100 rounds of .380 for KelTec......used to have more, but too expensive now!
2 ammo cans full of 12ga
400 rds of .270 for deer rifle
1400rds of .17hmr...works well with .22 silencer

Sold off other calibers of ammo and guns and moved to only what I need.

I'm ALWAYS looking to add more ammo than I am shooting, but lately have been going backwards as money has gotten tight.

Nothing wrong with what you are doing. Its a good plan. Get it while you can. I can tell you that it is never "enough" though.

Depends on how many mags and rifles you have....

1000 rifles with 800 mags, prolly ok
5 rifles with 3 mags....NOT ok!

I have around 15 P-Mags, 5 EZMags, 5 CProducts, and a 90 rd drum......for ONE rifle tho. I may add a DMR/SPR but WILL be doubling to tripling my number of mags.

How can you afford to NOT buy in bulk?

The reloads you are making are just fine for packing away as some kind of SHTF stash providing you have worked out your loads so it's what your rifle likes, but why waste em for plinking and range trips?

Save up for a bit so you can get a case or two of cheap plinking ammo.

If you hit sales and keep an eye on the market you can get plinkin ammo for about $0.23 a round, that's getting close to your reloading cost range.
