I recently got a Colt Canada/Diemaco AR upper. It is a retro style, and I noticed that the BCG looks a bit different. I've looked online, and it looks like a lot of the retro ARs/M16s seem to have this "older style" of BCG.

EX: My CMMG BCG VS The Diemaco:

I am just wondering if there is any difference in terms of performance and why they changed?

Early M16's (601's, 602's) and Air Force M16's (604's) didn't have the forward assist feature, therefore, the bolt carriers didn't have forward assist cuts. You have a carrier that came out of a rifle that wasn't equipped with forward assist, which means that it's not original to that upper. If you want your forward assist to function, you'll need a carrier with forward assist cuts.
