Is there anything wrong with going with a Colt 6940 right out of the box for a first rifle? (I will be getting a two stage trigger add on)  I like the fact it will already have quad rails...  This will be for range and general enjoyment;  not planning on going to war/SHTF !  Comments?

I got one a couple of weeks ago.  Trigger sucked, replaced with Geiselle.  Accurate and handles Wolf OK!  Added an EoTech and I really don't think it needs anything else.

Nope nothing wrong with that.  Gotta start somewhere, so might as well make it a good one.  I wish I had started with a top maker like Colt (or BCM/LMT/Noveske).  Woulda saved me having to take a loss when I moved up...

Only complaint I have with the 6940 is the folding front sight.  I prefer a fixed front sight.  But thats a personal choice....

I love mine!  It shoots great out of the box! The trigger wasn't that bad.  It is the same as any other milspec trigger from the factory IMO.

Should be a fine first rifle. I say go for it!!!

It was my first AR-15 when I bought it 6 months ago and I have been very happy with it.

WARNING!  Buying a quality AR-15 is likely to lead to BRD!  Early symptoms include uncontrollable impulses to buy "just one more" accessory to put on the rail. If you feel yourself succumbing to these temptations search this website for the full posting of Jcrowl's collection of AR-15's. Realizing that you will never catch up with him may restore some measure of sanity.

I bought mine in Nov '09, have been to the range on 3 occasions and shot about 500 rounds thru it so far.  Started with 40 rounds of expensive Prvi 69 match, 200 rounds of bang4buck Prvi 62 and some cheapo PMC Bronze 55.  All shot great.. even the PMC shot a full 30 round magazine into a quarter sized grouping @ 50 yds (save for a couple of flyers due to my error).  Very accurate, pleasing and well buillt rifle.

I love the built in rail and flip up sights.  Sure the rail could be longer, but for a first gun its works well and strong as hell.  Same with the flip up sights they could be prettier or better integrated into the rail, but they work well and take alot of effort to flip up or down.. its not something that will be flopping around.  I've mounted an EOTech XPS 2.0 up top, Tango Down VFG to the bottom and LED taclight to the side.  Also have a 3x mag, with FTS mount for shooting past 100yds..  everything mounts rock solid.

I get compliments from EVERYBODY at the range whenever I go.. most want to see it and a few guys asked to shoot it.  Best part, its a Colt and I can sell it for what/more than I paid for any day.  My next (2nd) rifle will probably be something more adaptable.. and a larger caliber (.308+) but for a newb looking to get into AR's and shoot some 223/556 the 6940 is a great all-in-1 out the box solution.

Hate to be a buzz kill, in my recent armorer class I was told of a little 'quirk' with the 6940.  I was told that the entire barrel needs to be removed from the upper, to replace the gas tube.  For this reason, I was advised to avoid this model.  I have not verified this info.

Plus Jcrowl's got that blue couch, you would have to go to a lot of garage sales to find that sweet baby!

Give up!

As much talk as there has been about the couch (pro& con), I have always kept silent because I am "color impaired".

This doesn't mean color blind (i.e. mistaking red for green), as a woman friend once put it, "You are the only person who would suggest getting house siding the color of the 'Harvest Gold' refrigerators from the 60's"

But it dawned on me when he posted the pics of his three latest ponies, the blue couch is the best background I have seen for displaying his wide variety of AR-15's.

And how many owners are worried about replacing the gas tube on a 6940?

Ya, being able to easily replace a gas tube would be stupid.  As you know, gas tubes never need to be replaced on safe queens.  You should buy 3 6940's

Here's an example, this is my second AR purchase..

LE6940 with Larue FW grip/Mounts and Aimpoint ML3 and 3X Magnifer...

I like it...

Wouldn't this be true of ANY true one piece monolithic upper?  Can you remove the gas tube of a gun with a Vltor VIS without removing the barrel?

You won't be disappointed buying a 6940 for a 1st, 2nd or 3rd gun.   A Bill Springfield trigger job ($35), an optic (Eotech, Aimpoint, Acog, etc), and a sling and you're set to go.  Mine have shot everything from PMC, LC, Prvi, Winchester, Hornady and never had a problem after shooting thousands of rounds.  Accuracy is what you would expect in a carbine.  Go for it!!!!

No, being able to replace a gas tube easily would certainly not be stupid. It is just not frequently required of normal users.  I only bought two 6940's.  I presume the crack about safe queens is to imply that I am unfamiliar with the firearm.  I thought at least a high school education was required for members here.

he is not referring to unfamiliarity. He is referring to not using it.

I can see how my responce appearred overy 'snotty', not meaning to offend, I apologize.
My point is, the gas tube situation is something worth of consideration before plunking down $1600 for the rifle.  I would want to know this before buying.  If the purchaser doesn't mind, well, at least he has been informed.  I'm confident the 6940 is excellent, and deserving the colt name, but I think I would prefer a 6920.

all you do is knock the gas tupe pin out and pull the tube out from the upper

My apologies for the crack about education.  It was silly and rude.  It seems that frequently when a contrary view is expressed re a particular issue with the AR-15, the one with the varying opinion is dismissed as simply not shooting the rifle (keeping it in the safe) and consequently being ignorant of the use of same.  Again,  I doubt that easy exchange of a barrel or gas tube is of  major concern to most users.   It certainly isn't to me.  I would guess that fewer than 5% of AR-15 users actually assemble their rifles or perform any but basic cleaning and maintance.

I was genuinely asking.  Having never owned a monolithic upper, either 6940 or VIS, I did not know and was curious....

" ... but I think I would prefer the 6920."

You may not be alone in that outlook. Two weekends I ago I saw a 6940 for sale for $ 1,279 + tax - which was the same price point (different venue) at which I had seen some 6920's listed.

Maybe those with a particular strain of BRD are willing to pay a premium for a rifle w/o the intergrated upper & rails, etc so they can "do it themselves".

Full disclosure: I did replace my 6940 pistol grip with an Ergo

Got my 6940 about 2 months ago.  I love it.  After letting the wife shoot it she decided she had to have one too, which, incidentally, is her first gun.  If you have the means to get a Colt as your first you're way ahead of the game.

its not true because I removed mine two days ago just to diss prove this myth.    knock out the roll pin, then slide the tube out through the upper.  who the hell thinks up these myths?

today I put a leupold 6-18  on mine and shot it off real sandabags   I fired 10   five shot groups using  PPU 75s BH 77s, and my handloads, all groups where  better then 1 inch at 100 yards.
try it again with  real bags or a rest adn you will see a much better group.

thats not using xm193 or some other  shit round
