I'll make this short and sweet. I posted in the 22 section but havent got an answer.
I just bought a lmt arp 5.56. Awsome gun for sure but I want to shoot 22s. The drop in is 200 bucks and a barrel and bolt from spikes is around 400. I have no problem spending the 400 but was interested in finding out how accurate the drop INS are compaired to a dedicated barrel. I plan on shooting anywhere from 50 to 100 yards with the 22 with 100 being my limit for a 22. How accurate should I be expecting to be at that range with a dedicated barrel considering I use good ammo and scope ? how accurate are the drop ins? Thanks for any input |

My experience with a Stag 1/9" 16"barrel, shooting 36grn copper jacketed, or copper washed is:
from 10yrds it shoots a little low. from 30rds it shoots damn near perfect with my optic (that is zeroed at 50yrds with .223) from 50yrds it shoots close to perfect but a little high From 50+ I have not had great accuracy at all. In short, if you plan on shooting 100yrds, get yourself a upper and build a dedicated upper for it with the correct barrel and twist. |

Here's a vid of my CMMG in my Bushy HBAR: Youtube vid of CMMG drop in unit in a Bushmaster XM15
My CMMG does just fine at 25 yards - shoots very clost to point of aim as set for standard 5.56 ammo. Can't say how well it groups beyond 25 yards. I like it because its easy to move from one rifle to another and works very well - I've had 100% function so far. I did smooth the working surfaces with lapping compound prior to shooting it though as they were parkerized. |

For 50y to 100y get the .22 upper.
The drop in convesion kits are for training use, not precision fire. In my experience they keep a 1" group at 25 yards and open up significantly at 50y (enough to keep it on a pie plate at 50 - but you're not going to bust a squirrel reliably). |

I love my Spikes Tactical, shoots great. The nice thing about a dedicated upper is you don't have to readjust your optics (if you have them) when you switch back and forth.
I just wish the bolt catch actually worked, but I think all 22 uppers use the magazine follower to keep the bolt open. Is that true? |

Somebody now makes a .22lr conversion Bolt release that allows you to use the hold open like a standard caliber set up. So you can drop that into the lower, get a upper with mags and you really do have the closest thing to a accurate training rifle possible. ETA: 22catch |

i talked to spikes since they actually make a barrel for the lmt mrp 5.56 but Tom pretty much said its only good up to about 50 yards for the accuracy im looking for. Maybe im kidding myself and a 22 wont shoot good any further then that? Tom did mention something about a lothar barrel thats match quallity. but he couldnt make it for my ar. i was told i got an email explaining why but i havent gotten it as of yet.
All i want is a bolt and Barrel. i dont want to change the whole upper. |

For 100yrd accuracy you may just get a purpose built shooter like a bull barreled 10/22.
As someone mentioned, the 22 setups really are geared more toward training, especially close quaters drills. That is how I run mine and love it. You will blast through at least 500rds with each trip. A cost effective option would be a kit for what you have to practice CQB and a seperate accurized .22lr for longer work. |
