Will bulk .22LR ammo work effectively with a 1/7 barrel or should i look into a dedicated .22 upper. Im asking because im torn between getting a dedicated .22 upper from spikes or tactical solutions, or simply buying a bolt conversion kit and dropping it on my BCM carbine. Ive heard about jacket failure WITH LIGHT AMMO  and im not really planning on doing much spending for expensive .22 ammo. Your thoughts please.

Thanks

If you want any kind of accuracy you will need a dedicated upper. If all you want to do is make noise and shoot cans the conversion kits work fine.

What do you want the gun for?... for 'dryfire practice' without having to work the bolt?  then get the conversion. it will(should) hold about an 8"group at 100m (my 1:7 with federal bulk .22lr does...)

If you want any 'real' accuracy?... get the .22lr dedicated upper...

I use mine for carbine practice. Shooting 2" plates out to 25 yards and A zone plates at 50 and 100.

1/7 works for that.

If I want accuracy with a 22 I pull out my $40 bolt action Romanian training rifle or my $200 Marlin Papoose.

The .22 chamber conversion will work ok if you don't require good accuracy.

However, the 1:7' twist is kind of violent for soft lead .22 bullets and you are going to get leading in your barrel and possibly in the gas port.  Lead deposits in your bore can affect accuracy with your regular ammo for serious shooting.  Lead can be a pain in the butt to completely remove from a bore as most copper solvents wont dissolve it.

Just my two cents here.

All costs aside, for me, shooting a rifle that isn't very accurate at all isn't a whole lot of fun.  Even if I'm just plinking around.  A proper/dedicated .22 upper will give you better performance, enjoyment and satisfaction.  Especially if you want to accurately & consistantly hit soda cans & stuff at 50yds & over.

For pure .22 plinking enjoyment, a used Glenfield .22 auto & $25 Walmart 4x scope are a hard combo to beat for the bucks involved.
