| I'm new to black guns, but i think im getting the bug. I am getting a complete DPMS lower to go with a complete S&W M&P upper. Do you guys think i am making a mistake, or will that make a good first AR? Any advice is welcome. thank you. |
| kinda new to the black rifle world my self, but if you're buying a complete lower and a complete upper, doesn't that kinda defeat the point. not to be rude but all you've done is taken two complete parts of different manufactures and put them together(literally, put the two together and snap in the take down pins.) see this all the time in here and have not figured it out yet. but sure would like to know what the deal is. |
| I think some people just want one to shoot first then upgrade as they go. It also depends on cost. Some people don't have $1500 to build a rifle. Besides buying parts then tools to assemble adds up fast. And in some cases buying an upper and lower is cheaper than buying a complete rifle. |
| BT, of course you're right - this ISN'T "building" an AR-15. But by buying the upper and lower on separate orders he doesn't have to pay excise tax on the complete rifle, just the lower half. Saves about 11% on the complete upper. Even better if you buy a stripped lower, then that's the only thing you pay the extra tax on (on say ~$100 instead of ~$800). |

A Frankenstein gun kinda implies that cheap parts are cobbled together by someone named Igor - so you would expect problems. But an AR assembled from quality parts pulled together by someone who did his homework and had a plan should work fine - and most of us would call the latter a custom built AR. The OP's DPMS lower and CMMG upper may not be the finest components but should make a fairly decent low end AR.
Anyway there's something to be said for buying a complete rifle that comes with a factory warranty, espeically for a first time AR buyer. A lot of us don't follow that advice though but it usually turns out all right. It did for me. |

I'd get a different lower, but for no general reason, I just like Spike Tactical's offerings.
CMMG upper would be fine. I'd go BCM for the price difference, or I'd sell the BCG in the CMMG and replace it with a BCM unit. Either way, it'll be a good first AR. EDIT: Buy this upper, great deal and you'll never need to upgrade it: Spikes Tactical LE Upper for $525 |
| I've never understood why buying a stag upper for $545 and a complete lower for $290 adds up to $835. And the same rilfe purchased complete costs $949. (all prices msrp) AND you have to pay more taxes right? Any reason why buying the complete rilfe would make more sense? |
| Absolutely nothing wrong with that as your first AR. If you had said DPMS upper and S&W lower I would have said differently but the upper is the more important part and S&W makes a great product. There is also nothing wrong with mixing manufacturers and don't listen to the people who tell you differently. I have a KAC lower/BCM upper which just so happens to be my favorite AR. I've also had LMT lowers on Colt uppers as well as a Mapul lower on a Noveske upper. Enjoy your new rifle! |
