I'll bite...
First off- check over on the Industry/Colt forum, if you want the full load of Kool-Aid. I think the 6940 is a great platform- accurate, reliable, tough, light, and versatile. Construction is stellar, fit and finish are excellent. Some don't like the front fold-down sight, but that usually reserved to those who don't own the rifle- I happen to love this feature. Trigger is typical stock Colt, and needs a bit of help- but still solid. Seems to function and cycle on just about anything I feed it, including my favorite cream-puff reloads. Monolithic upper does appear to offer slightly improved accuracy. It's nice to have an uninterupted full lenght front rail and full-float barrel right out of the box- great value for all you get with the 6940. |

Thank you for the concise, yet helpful input. I really don't understand the monolithic rail - why? What happened if it got damaged? The rail is a continuous extension of the upper receiver itself correct (came from the same forging)? I mean, it's not like you have an upper receiver and a separate, removable but continuous rail? I know I probably am not making any sense ![]()

Lindy,
Correct- the upper is a full monolithic, so the entire upper including 3/4 of the handrail is all one forging- no way to remove the handrail other than the bottom rail. This could be considered a liability if any of the rail were to be seriously damaged- you'd have to scrap the upper and start over. More difficult to clean the barrel exterior as well... I also don't think there would be an easy way to add a piston conversion (not that I would do it, but it's something to consider if you were thinking of such an option down the road) Monolithic because it simplifies construction (simple in that there are fewer parts), is arguably more reliable, and lends itself to better accuracy. I also like the fact it's full length- no limit to the number of optic and accessory options- plenty of room. No doubt you have pros/cons- have to weight your desired features against what some may consider to be liabilities. For me it was a no-brainer, easy choice. |
