When I pull the charging handle with my bolt  forward and a loaded Magazine, the charging handle does not spring forward when I let go.  Is this normal, to have to push it back into place.  If not, how do I fix it? Thanks.

Wait... so when we start off the bolt is closed, mag is inserted, cycle the action and the charging handle doesn't go back forward?

[#2]
Yes, that's what is going on.  I have to hit the bolt release for it to chamber a round.  Is that correct.
2/8/2010 7:20:37 PM EDT
[#3]
Have you tried different magazines?  That's not normal.

OP, are you sure that the bolt is not locked back as you are pulling the CH.  If the bolt is forward in the locked position, the BCG should ride along all the way to the back and when you release the CH it should snap back and strip a round from the mag and load it in to the chamber.

Yes, tried different magazines.  I'm using p-mags now.  Anyone know how to fix it.

I'm positive it is in the forward position.  When the BCG slides to the rear it locks in place.

This.  Otherwise the only wild-ass guess I have is that you've got a somehow out-of-spec bolt catch.

Details on the rifle - did you, or someone else build it?  Was it a gunshop purchase?  What's the deal on the gun?

Any other ideas?

So you're saying the bolt locks to the rear on a full mag when you pull the charging handle?

What you are describing is normal if you have inserted an empty mag into the AR and you pull the CH back.  The BCG will lock back and you will need to push the CH forward into the locked position.
That will not happen during live fire.  During live fire the BCG will just lock back.

It has a model 1 16" CAR upper with a Lauer Custom Weaponry Lower.  Stag Arms Lower Parts kit.

Then I'm guessing out of spec bolt catch.

Something is out of spec.  Shouldnt happen.

Wow, I feel pretty stupid right now.  I was charging it slow because my kid is asleep and didn't want to wake him, so it wasn't going forward when I released it.  But I said screw it and pulled it back quick and it flew forward.  Whew.  Sorry fellas.  Thanks for all the help.

haha, i did the same thing when i finished my build as the gf was sleeping.

then i remembered something bout "riding the bolt", figured thats what people meant.

hey, better to do something relatively silly like that than something absolutely stupid like an AD right?

New problem to add to this thread. I have a red, palm shaped mark on my face. What solvent will get that off?

Are you aware that the firing pin is free floating? Quit charging the gun in the house.

Umm...I do this but only when I'm loading it up to put it back in the safe...never had a problem...but there is a chance so its pointed in a safe direction.

I hope some of you realize that a free floating firing pin actually helps PREVENT slam fire discharges. Without the free floating aspect, it would be alot more prone to this "problem" that gun show gurus love to discuss. Dimple? yes...fire? no.
