Bushmaster A2 Upper: carry handle rear sight - When properly sighted in, the rear sight is always angled like shown in the pics below... Is this normal, or does something need to be done to fix it?

Situation fine...everything normal.

Standard A2 rear sights have a single spring loaded detent between the carry handle body and the rear assembly. This minor twist is from that spring pushing the rear sight body firmly against the carry handle body.

Perfectly Normal.

The National Match A2 sights use bedding or a  pin driven down the hole to center the aperture out. If it's angled it can cause fuzziness (if your eyes are good enough to see it).  But yes, all A2 sights are like that.

Normal. You should see the one I got off a Colt.

I was going to say that looks out of wack but then I went to look at one of mine and it is the same way!
Guess thats normal!

It's normal but you can correct the angle with a piece of UHMW tape (sticky on one side super slick on the other) stuck to the right side of the upper between the upper receiver and the sight itself.  UHMW tape can be bought in varying mill thickness via the Internet.  Use a feeler gauge set and stick it between the sight and the upper on the right side to help you determine what thickness of UHMW tape you need.

See this web site: http://www.cshyde.com/Tapes/UHMWtape.htm ( and no I don't know how to make it a "Hot link."   If I did I would have.  If anyone wants to take the time to instruct me how to do so it would be greatly appreciated).

a proper ar smith can make short work of that normal issue
might be worth looking into if it's going to end up in a match or a life long iron sighted rig.

It's only normal as long as you are accurate, of course if you happen to miss it's because of a crooked sight.

when you make a post there's buttons just below the text field (labeled "insert tags"). the second button from the right lets you make a hot link.

I tend to look through the aperature rather than down on it from above.

You don't have a clue what you are talking about, this is completely 100% normal.  It is spring loaded so will always stay in this position to ensure consistent sighting.  Leave it alone.

Oh yeah, since it's a Colt takeoff, I have no clue what I'm talking about

It has nothing to do with the fact that it's a Colt, not sure what you're trying to imply there.  All carry handles regardless of the manufacturer have this "cant" to them.  I have even seen an official letter from Armalite addressing this very issue, can't find it right now.

Not all. I've seen a RRA A2 whose rear sight fit snugly against the handle, and had no cant at all. I was out of line with the Colt comment, I apologize. I do think that canting to a certain degree will cause problems, as the aperture will be pointing too far in another direction.

The twist is irrelevant to sighting as long as it's consistent, and there's a detent and spring in there to keep it consistent.

There is a way to fix this normal condition.  Remove the sight from the handle or upper receiver and drill a small horizontally-oriented hole in the right side of the sight opposite the hole for the preload spring.  Insert a small universal head rivet (aluminum or plastic) in the hole and file the height of the rivet until it repositions the sight to align with handle while being pushed by the spring.  Reassemble the whole thing and you are GTG.
