Silicone oil and grease is mentioned in some of the archives.  What is the final word on the use of such products?  I have used it on one of my AR's for a short time now and I see no wear but I don't know if it will be a long term issue.  It coats very even, lasts well, seems to lube good enough, so what is the downside?  I don't hear it in use by anyone so there must be a reason.

Disclaimer:  I have no experience in using slilcone oil or grease on firearms.

Silicone products have a number of rather unique properties.  They make very good mold release products.  They are extremely good as lubricating rubber or polymers especially when in contact with metal.  They are extremely good at protecting electronics from water.  They make hair feel silky smooth. (they are the active ingredient in better hair conditioners for both humans and animals).  They are biologically inert thus are used in industrial cooking and medical devices.

I have never heard of them being sold for metal on metal lubrication, or anti corrosion.  Personally, I would not choose them for firearm lubrication.  Are they listed as ingredients on any gun oil?

This is one I have seen going mainstream in stores, but I have heard of similar products being used in place of other thin oils like WD-40.  While I wouldn't use the before mentioned product for my own reasons I have seen it used plenty in firearms with no negative results.  I have thought of using silicone grease on the slide rails on my 1911 to see how well that would hold up.

Silicone is a good water displacing product for corrosion protection. YMMV

Gunk makes a silicone spray I have used on rags to wipe down steel to prevent corrosion.  I just don't know about lube qualities.
