I recently had the opportunity to hold a few custom made AR's. On all of them the upper was mated tight with the lower. I mean there was NO gap or wobble in there at all. I bought a Bushmaster Carbine about 10 years ago and the upper does not fit that well on the lower. I can move the upper on the lower a little. Is there some way to eliminate this movement and gap? Is this even an issue?

Thanks

In short there is nothing wrong with alittle play, it's to be expected. As long as it functions properly your GTG.

It has always functioned properly. The wobble is a bit irritating when handling but otherwise its cool.

Thanks for your response

I don't know if these work but if the play really bothers you you can try them.

Thanks for the response. Is there anything that can be done to fit this better, or is it just a characteristic of this particular rifle?

I had a Bushy that was loose like that. I know exactly what you are talking about. Does it have you thinking, "Does it really need to be THIS loose?" rattle rattle rattle? Tactical Machining makes a nice fitting lower. They have fit well for me with Bushmaster, Colt 6940 upper, TM upper, and Colt 16" lightweight upper. A little too tight at first, but they tend to loosen to perfection after a range trip or two. Or you can try an Accuwedge. Never tried one, but I assume it would tighten up the fit somewhat. Good luck.

ETA: See disclaimer....

Yes.  My CMMG had a little play I found annoying.  I popped an accuwedge in the lower and the play is gone.  Some folks go cheap and use a foam earplug, but i doubt it would hold up long.  Also, quite a few folks use the o-ring method.  I'm not sure how it's done, but I'm sure someone can elaborate on how to do it.

Yeah, you hit the nail on the head with "does it really need to be THIS loose''. Ill keep the Tactical Machining in mind if i go with a new lower for my Bushy upper. Thanks for the heads up!!

I used an accuwedge in one of my builds because there was a little play in it. It works fine. There is another method where you can get an o-ring and put it around the front lug on the upper and it will tighten it up, I haven't tried this and am not sure what size o-ring to use. Most recommend this method because you're not introducing anything foreign into the lower receiver.

I would love to know more about the O-ring method. I have plenty of them. I also have access to machining equipment at work. I could make and fit some Delrin or UMHW pieces if I knew exactly what and where the shimming is usually done at.

It's not an issue at all and it never has been.  It's inherent in the design.  When two parts that pin together each have a tolerance range you are bound to have some that fit tighter and some that fit looser.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the accuwedge. If i cant get any definite answers on the O-ring Method, I will get an Accuwedge.

I dont find it to be an issue, its more of a nuisance to me. After handling some quality built AR's I have seen that the Bushmaster doesn't fit as tight as I would like.

Thanks for your response!

If you decide to go with a new lower, TM is in Deland, FL. You can go pick up the upper in person and not have to pay a transfer fee. I heard they price match too, not sure though.
