I was helping my buddy install a new PRI flip up front sight on a 14.5 inch barrel that was pinned and welded, in the process of removing the flash hider the threads on the end of the barrel were damaged. after installing the new front sight i tried installing the new Flash hider but it was not possible without putting some extreme torque on the flash hider. I told him about it and said i did not think we should install it until after fixing the threading issue, he went ahead and installed it anyway and it took some considerable force to get the thing on we pinned it back and used silver solder to finish up the job.
My question is how is this going to affect the accuracy of his rifle? part of my argument against installing the flash hider was that it could make the barrel inaccurate what do you guys think? |

Entirely possible. Any time you venture outside of torque specs on a harmonic device, things can happen. Your friend might get lucky, but I'm thinking probably not. yeah he torqued the shit out of that thing he had about a foot long flat head screw driver stuck through the flash hider with the rifle secured in a vise going to town on it hes a big guy and it was taking everything he had i just know that rifle isnt going to shoot worth a damn. |

This is the fix |

The barrel is threaded 1/2"x 28 TPI? The stress is between the threads unless you really tightened it down at the end. It shouldn't affect the inner part of the barrel. The only way to tell is to shoot it. not meaning to sound like an idiot but i am not sure whats its threaded its a CMMG lightweight mid length 14.5 inch barrel i am guessing it is threaded standard. i am not sure how much he cranked down on it at the end but he was giving it all he had. he said he was going to shoot it on Friday so i guess we will find out if i was right or not i really don't want to be but he shouldn't of done that dumb shit. its actually kind of funny because CMMG doesn't even make those light weight barrels anymore from what i have seen so he is royally screwed guess hes going to have to go with a 16" lightweight if he can find it anywhere i haven't even seen anybody selling a stripped lightweight mid length 16" barrel in a long time. |
