I love the 22-250 and have owned several but really, if you fire a SA rapidly the barrel will heat up far too much and take a long period to cool down. By rapidly I mean the shots are too close together to allow the barrel to return to ambient temp between shots. Firing that slow makes a bolt action a better idea. The fact is you could ruin a barrel in a long afternoon of shooting if you got carried away with an AR. I even keep barrel wear in mind when shooting my bolt actions because I run some expensive barrels and don't want to loose the guilt edge accuracy too soon.
Not saying wanting a 22-250 in an AR platform is bad. I'm guilty of this myself and went so far as to talk with someone at Armalite about the idea. However my experience with bolt actions and barrel wear lead me to drop the idea. BTW Armalite did mention that they had to play around with the gas port hole in terms of dia. and placement. If you go ahead with a project keep that in mind'. Then again there's water cooling ... there I go again. |
