This is my first post so bare with me...  I have a chance to buy my first .223 M4 style firearm.  Used with 1,000 rounds through it. My question is, am I buying the correct firearm. What i'm looking at is a Del-Ton A2 HBAR 20" $695.00. M4 style, chrome barrel, flat top, front sight, six position stock. It will be used for plinking and eventually up years down the road.  For the money, is this worth it?

you can get a delton kit for around 525 with the cl barrel and get a spikes lower for 115 shipped and ffl'ed . so 640 for new or 695 for used.. no paperwork is a bonus though

Well, he, being new, is obviously not familiar with the naming convention of the AR variants. Perhaps it would be helpful to explain it to him rather than post a stupid smiley.

It was advertised, "Del-Ton (1) A2 HBAR 20" $695.00".  Are you thinking that it is a solid stock and not the six position???  The Del-Ton is in a smaller town north of us about 45 minutes out.  Like I mentioned, i'm new to all of this.  I appreciate all the help I can get.  I will see it Friday afternoon.

If thats exactly what you want. But you might look at Del Ton's site above if you already haven't and pick a configuration
you may like better, like a 16" CAR or middy upper and a lower that will be comensurate with that price. It will come with a manufacturer warranty plus it it hasn't been shot 1000 ? times. Your first AR needs to be a virgin anyway.

If it's in good condition (do you have the ability/a friend to check it out?), and considering the absence of shipping, sales tax and FFL transfer costs, it's probably a decent - not great, but decent - deal.

FTF you might get it down $40-50.

I've been Googling and checking the Del-Ton site as advised.  Looks to be what I don't want.  Like I said, i'm new but want to learn.  This site looked like a good place to start. Thanks.  It's like the first girl friend.  You spend time with them and dump them later on.  I would rather get exactly what I want and keep it forever. And, make slow improvements as time goes on......

right.

M4, (aka: M forgery):

notice the notch forward of the front sight base, and the profile of the barrel under where the handguards go.

A2 HBAR:

this is a 20" example, but the profile still applies. i believe the old CAR variants had this profile, though the barrel length was 11.5"

i hope this helps!

Lets fast forward along the learning curve and put you on a 16" middy as they are extremely popular by the serious shooters and for good reason. 'Hear me now and believe me later'. You might shy away from Hbars as they don't feel
heavy until you start handling lugging it around and when you put a raill, light and VFG on them which newbs
like myself did you'll be sending it to ADCO later to get it lightened. A Chrome lined or CL bore is also the way to go.
Hope this helps and welcome to the disease.

One other thing, don't get high centered on the 1/7 vs. 1/9 twist bbl. debate. I'd go with a 1/9
as it shoots every thing a 1/7 will shoot except 75 - 77 gr. plus you can shoot .22 with a 200.00 Con. kit,
which is a good way to learn shooting with irons.
