I've finally purchased another AR.  It's an M&P 15 O.R.  I need sight for it before I can even shoot it of course.  My question is, do I need a front  BUIS for gas blocks, such as the one made by Midwest Industries, or can I use just a regular sight such as a  Magpul front sight?

I hope this makes sense.

Thank you.

I think I read that there's a risk of a Magpul sight melting if mounted on a gas block.

Really?  Wow.  Well, earlier this morning I had already ordered a MI front gas block sight.  After that though I got to looking closer and it almost looks like the Smith's gas block and flat top receiver are in alignment.  After looking at that I started to wonder if I really needed a "gas block" sight.

Maybe I'll just keep the MI sight on order then.

It might be an issue only under extreme rapid fire situations. <shrug>

On a related note, I just checked magpul.com and can't even locate their sight. The MBUS category is empty. I wonder what's up with that?

Hmm.  Yeah I just did too.  Weird.  I guess I'll keep the MI front sight and try a Magpul rear sight.  Hopefully that'll get me by until I can get an Eotech here in another month or two.

From the looks of the pictures, although it is a gas block rail, it appears to be a tall version so you should only need a regular backup sight height.

I'm sure it'll get you by... many folks get by forever without holographic sights.

You can tell very easily if they are on the same plane by laying the rifle upside down a flat surface, such as your kitchen counter.  Or even up against the wall.

I have a Smith M&P15 OR rifle I purchased last year. The rail on top of the gas block is the same height as the rail on top of the upper receiver. You will need a rail mount front sight, not a gas block mount model, in order to achieve proper sight alignment with your rear BUIS.

Thanks for the help guys.  I ended up just getting a set of Magpul's for the front and rear.  Honestly, I don't shoot AR's that much, and will be buying an Eotech within a few months.  Hopefully these will get me by.

Thanks!
