I'm looking at purchasing an upper for my first build. Just for the record, I currently own a Colt 6920 and no other ARs. I know that DSA is selling some uppers at very good prices. I'm debating between the following:
Nitride finished, chrome moly 16" fluted mid-length 1:9 twist upper for $300. M4 pattern 16" upper with a 1:7 twist chrome lined barrel for $325. I know it's ultimately up to me.....but which would you choose and why. I like the idea of a 1:7 chrome lined barrel, but I do already have that configuration with the Colt. The only thing bothering me about the middy is the 1:9 twist and NON-chrome lined option. Also, the Middy is fluted.....I kind of like that. HELP!? |

Let me tell ya somthing about Nitride. The other day I had a FAL barrel that had a short chamber issue due to a worn reamer. We had already sent this barrel out to the Nitride company. I barreled the upper and headspaced it and I could tell it was a shorter rougher chamber(we normaly trash this but it was the only one i had in the shop), so I figure I'll put a pull though reamer in it to clean it up(this is how M14s are headspaced and built). I knew the Nitride was hard and it may damage the reamer but I needed this gun done for a demo shoot.
WELL the Nitride had made the chamber so hard that the reamer couldn't even get started let alone cut. I put the bore scope in to inspect the chamber and where the reamer was in contact and it looked unscared. I have cut chrome lined chambers and while they destroy reamers you can cut it. THIS NITRIDE IS HARD HARD STUFF I AM SOLD ON IT. Thanks DSArms Managment. |

Does DSA have any 1:7 uppers in the works?

I got the day off from work. Just sitting here waiting on the "brown truck of happiness" to stop by sometime today with my brand new DS Arms nitride middy upper and charging handle. I ordered it on the friday18th and it shipped Monday the 21st. The UPS website says it is on a truck for delivery today!
I would be out shooting tomorrow but the DD BCG and rear sight I ordered won't be delivered until the 29th. So I guess I will have to wait for New Years day to go break it in. I was very impressed with the customer service that I received from Jessica. She was a great help! More companies need to find employees like her! Pictures to follow later today. |

I will see about doing a run of Middy 1:7 DSArms Managment This will be interesting, I have another spare lower. Today I received my DSA fluted nitrided middy and so far am very impressed. I am about to install it on my BCM lower with BCM BCG, hope to shoot it this weekend. I received one of the nitride M4 uppers back in October and have nothing but good to say about it, it shoots as well as my eyes will allow. I have no way of testing the nitride vs chrome comparison, other than shooting and maybe doing chrono comparisons. I know we all will have our own preferences no matter what the facts are, but I hedge my bets and have both (chrome and nitride) and now this middy. I will say first impressions are very good, the proof will be in the testing. When you offer the 1:7 middy, I'm on board again. Have been using DSA FAL receivers and parts for 10 years with no complaints, why should the AR15 results be different? I inquired about the DSA bcg manufacturer and/or more info, just told USGI spec manufacturer. How 'bout a nitrided BCG maybe? MPtested? Having good luck with BCM and CMT BCG so far. Thanks DSA, my wife is not as happy with my new toys, but she usually gets over it. Now to test these 2 nitrided M4 against my 2 chromed, I better buy more ammo... More info is always appreciated from the DSArms people, even though you'll never make everybody happy. Keep trying, and make the new stuff links easier to find. Long term wear testing data chrome vs nitride is bound to bust some bubbles, change some myths. Contact me with information on test results that you can allow, I'd love to study the data. This is a nice looking M4 pair... Thanks again DSA... |
