Looking for my first AR and wanted to know more about the different gas systems.  What are the pros and cons between rifle, mid-length, and carbine gas systems.  Plan on using the AR for personal defense and would like to take a class in the future. Leaning to a midlength or rifle system.  I don't see myself using it inside my house in room to room CQB, but more for open engagements. What brands should i look at?

Do you want/need a folding stock?

This way you can have a CQB weapon without sacrificing barrel length...

In that case you should look at a Sig556 folder or the SBR (even more compact) or the 'new' PARA TTR.

I have an LWRC M6A2 SMG, as well, and as piston systems go its the top one in my mind.

But if I were to own just one...it would be the PARA.

I'd be interested in 16-18" barreled mid length gas system. Probably would make a really sweet shooter splitting the difference between a rifle length and a carbine.

Midlegnth is right in the middle..just as reliable operation as a 20" system..carbine runs the hottest, hardest and dirtiest of the 3.There are ways to tame the Carbine and improve operation it ultimately compactness is your first priority.Midlength is the best of both worlds.Full size the AR15 is in its original design form and the most reliable.

16" barrel MID is the best
20" barrel Rifle is best.

I have a 14.5" with a carbine system, a 16" with a middie system, and a 14.7" with an LWRCi piston system.  They all work great.

If I was getting a 16" barrel, I'd get the middie system (BCM is the way to go here IMO).  It's a bit easier on parts.
