Well, my buddy found a new DPMS complete upper for $400, but it is not chrome lined. What are the pros & cons? How long of a barrel life should he expect? He will not be using any corrosive ammo & cleans his firearms after every use. Thanks Aaron

Depends on how hard he runs it. Shouldn't be a problem getting 15-25k out of it.
We took apart this rental DPMS level AR and the thing had obviously seen thousands of rounds.... same non chrome lined barrel. The leade/bullet jump was crazy. A 55 FMJ completely cleared the case mouth and then some before it hit the rifling. |

He won't have any problems
I have a non chrome lined DPMS barrel on my favorite rifle its seen two 1500 round carbine classes, one of which it was raining all day, and over 6k rounds in its life. Ive got that rifle so hot I couldn't hold it anymore. it still groups just fine enough for me, it hasn't melted or exploded, its not rusting apart, and ive only cleaned it twice. And i live in houston texas, the most humid place on earth

(at least to the barrel) |

(at least to the barrel) What? Actually, I should have qualified that statement. I'm also somewhat of a "long range tactical" (or Sniper) rifle shooter and in those circles it's well known that you can F-up a barrel faster with a cleaning rod that's improperly deployed than just about anything. Besides, Cleaning the bore is wear and tear that's largely unnecessary. Shoot until accuracy diminishes and then clean. This is a hotly debated topic... I know. But it has to at least be mentioned. As far as the OP... Don't sweat the bore not being Chrome Lined. Chances are pretty good it will last longer than you own the rifle. If not, and you have treated it right, it will have served you well and just replace it. |

The chrome vrs. Non-chrome barrel thing gets beat to death. If you are buying NEW and a chrome is available for like $40-50 extra, go for the chrome if you have the money. If you find a deal on a non-chrome barrel/upper and its take it or leave it, go for it!
I just got one of the ArmaLite "Eagle Arms" Uppers on sale for like $355. I could care less that its not chrome lined. It is a beautiful upper, well finished, nice ArmaLite bolt, true M4 feed ramps. All of this for a price too good to pass up. It went on a RRA lower and made one lovely rifle. I now have a beautiful new AR for $575. No complaints! |
