I finally broke down and bought a free float handguard (MI carbine two piece). For 170 smackers it was a good deal and the buyers on bravo company were very happy with it. Is it really worth it? I mean does a free float handguard really make a descernable difference in accuracy on a stock colt 6920? Please help me out with any info.

The main reason I freefloated my daily driver was to stretch out the "rail estate" to better fit my preferences.
It streamlined some of the mounts I was using (built in QD sockets) and uncluttered my field of view.
Any accuracy gains were simply a bonus. That may seem backwards, but it was as accurate as I needed before,
so anything better is just icing.

Maybe?

The accuracy gain is minimal, but it adds up at longer ranges.

Accuracy doesn't improve much. You are just mainly getting more places to hang stuff on your gun.

Plus they look cool

You probably cant tell a difference with a 6920. I think if you are buying a rail, its dumb not to buy a free float. They are not too different in price and there's nothing but gain with free floating rails. Good buy!

NO PLAY is the main reason to get a FF on a short barrel.

It's worth it if you lock-up a sling attached to your barrel... or if you rest your barrel hard against barriers/braces for longer ranges... general "shooting" you wont notice the difference...

It's only when you're pressing/pulling/wrenching on the barrel that you notice the 'free float' benefit... so wrench/push/lean on the tube/rail system... not the barrel ;)

I'm a gorilla with sling-locking... and I lean my gun on barriers like an amputee for competitions... so I would notice a significant shift at pretty much any range if I didnt float...
