I have an extra 6920 laying around that I've never shot.  I've kinda been wanting to get either a Larue or Noveske rifle because of how accurate everyone says they are.   I know that the accuracy is mainly from the barrel, so if I took the colt barrel off and replaced it with a Noveske 16in recon barrel with midlength gas sys, would the improvement in accuracy improvement be that noticable or not?  And for ammo, I typically reload my own.

the accuracy is from the shooter. A good shooter with the Colt will out shoot an average shooter with the Noveske everytime.

ETA: keep the colt barrel and buy more ammo.

+1 I agree with that statement completely.  The only reason I ask, is I can get a Recon barrel for $350ish and it has about 20 rds through it, and then the rifle was sold as parts due to a friends financial situation.  I just wanted to know if the barrel would make that much of a difference?

And I really don't want to pay for a full larue or noveske setup––ie: $1500

its a carbine, not a bench rest gun for shooting small groups. The Colt barrel is more than good enough.  Buy more ammo with that $350

For a defense rifle, no. I'm sure the Noveske barrel has advantages over the Colt, but it's just a waste of money to swap them out in this situation. It's not like you'll go from throwing rocks to drilling .223 diameter holes from a barrel switch, if that's what you're looking to do with this gun.

I cant tell you exactly how much difference it would make, but I do know
that my Colt 6920 with a scope and match ammo will do about 1.5" at 100 yards.

How much difference the new barrel will make I am really not sure.

Personally, If you really want amazing accuracy I would just get another upper.
Get the correct weapon for what you are trying to do.

Three 10-shot groups fired from a free-floated Colt 16” M4 profile barrel at 100 yards had extreme spreads of

1.42”
1.19”
1.56”

for a 10-shot group average extreme spread of 1.39”

Three 10-shot groups fired from a free-floated Noveske Recon barrel at 100 yards had extreme spreads of:

0.81”
0.93”
1.01”

for an average 10-shot extreme spread of 0.92".

Not near enough benefit to make it worth it, based on my 16" experience.  You do not have match potential, and the cost and labor FAR outweighs the benefit.  Also, you will have a barrel left over that is rather decent...  What a waste.

Calculating solution based on good advice from bigbore and good data from Molon...

A few things to consider when considering how accurate a barrel to be:

-How will you employ your carbine (ie. shooting in training classes 0 - 100 yards or hunting prarie dogs at 300 yards and beyond)

-Size of your target

-Type of ammo you will be shooting (ie. will you be shooting Wolf 55 grain or handloaded or match ammo)

-Type of optic you will be using (ie. non-magnified red dot, 3x fixed, 1-4x, 2.5-10x, 4-16x. Remember you can't hit what you can't see)

-Your skill level

-Your eyesight

You'd be surprised what a Colt chrome lined barrel can do with consistent, match ammo.

What ammo is that Molon?

And to JonLSU, if you are hand loading you should be able to get excellent accuracy from either barrel. If you are going to top the rifle with a magnified optic of 6x or more, you may see a SMALL benefit from the Noveske barrel.
