Hey guys,
My uncle went out shooting with me today and brought his AR around.  To my surprise it looks like its a California Model.  10 round clip, pinned flash hider, fixed stock (that looks collapsible but is not).
Is there a kit to make it collapsible with just adding the new bolt for the stock and drilling the buffer tube?
Thanks guys,
Bill

if its truly a CA gun then the magazine is permanently secured in the magwell, meaning you have to remove the rear take down pin to load the gun.

You could buy a new buffer tube assembly and stock and bam collapsible.  but check your state laws as some states, IE:  New York do not allow collapsible stocks.

Where and when did he get his rifle? I doubt many California models are sold anywhere other than California, and there would be no reason for a fixed stock if the magazine was fixed as it would be in a California model. The CA colts I've seen have functional M4 type stocks on them.  I'm thinking your uncle's rifle sounds more like one of the rifles produced during the years of the Clinton ban.

I thought Colt was specifically banned under the CADOJ listings.  That would either make it preban and your Uncle wasted a lot of money, or its contraband.

It sounds like it is just a BAN rifle made after 1994...nothing 'CA' about it.

I have no idea on the year he got it.  He said there was a ban on collapsible stocks for a few months which is why he got it for a good price YEARS ago, just never fired it til yesterday lol.  I just assumed it was a cali model due to those things.

Colt is specifically named on the CA AW ban list, but the CA models they sell have permanently attached magazines, making them non AW's. IIRC they even went so far as to make the bottom of the magazine well sealed so that it is not a simple matter of removing a bullet button or other locking mechanism to convert it back to the way God and Eugene Stoner intended.

Are rimfire versions exempted in CA? I was in Turner's in north SD (just south of Miramar) yesterday and saw a Colt (the brand was visible) on the rack. I did a double take when I realized it was one of the new 22 rimfire versions.

yes, the rimfires are exempted. Colts are exempted specifically by model, so you could in theory import a stripped CAR A3 lower  because it is not named on the list. There are possibly others, but you run a risk of a LEO who is not well acquainted with the ban list arresting you anyway just because they say Colt, even with the CAR-A3.  The CA specific .223 models have closed magwells and are therefore exempted because they do not meet the definition of AW. Likewise, rimfires are specifically EXcluded from the ban so they are ok.

Yeah Rimfires are legit. Assault Weapons were defined as Centerfire weapons...thats why Bushmaster 22LR ARs are availiable in CA. Colt has one and the same maker that makes Colt 22 M4s are gonna make legit H&K Mp5 branded guns in 22LR soon. So a lot of choices to choose from which is great!!!

No and Yes.

A fully assembled Colt, listed on the ban list must have been registered at the time of the ban or it is illegal PERIOD...so even a rimfire Colt Sporter II is illegal if it wasnt registered.
There is no law against collapsing stocks in CA, as long as you use a tool to remove the magazine.  So a closed magazine well and a fake M4 stock is worthless.  This is not a CA AR15...its a NJ, / NY  firearm.

The OP is talking about a standard AR15, with a pinned FH and Fixed fake M4 stock...thats a NY / NJ firearm.  No one in CA has any use for a fake M4 stock...we use real ones here.  We also dont need to pin FHs.  We can have bayo lugs too.

Only Colts NOT listed are ok to have in any caliber  If its at Turners..its OK, (and over priced).   the .22lr only allows you to bypass laws on detachable magazines.

Sounds like a Colt Match Target M4 made during the federal AWB.

Those had a mock collapsable stock & a muzzle brake. Shipped with 5 or 9 round mags IIRC.  Any $79.00 M4 stock set will work on the MT lower. The muzzle brake may require a gunsmith services to change over to a flash supressor. Depending on how it is attached and if the brl is threaded under the brake,.

Get a BCM stock kit and send the upper to ADCO for the flash suppressor work.

Its amazing to me how people from other states think they know California laws.  Most of you are wrong.  You can buy a bullet button which requires a "tool" to drop the magazine, you DO NOT have to top feed your AR.  Also, collapsible stocks are perfectly legal, along with FH and bayo lugs as long as you have the bullet button installed.
Colt is on the Ban list BUT there is a Colt 5.56 model sold here, it says "COL'S Law Enforcement Carbine" on the side.  It is NOT considered a ban list item.  The "S" on the end of Colt makes it legal here, they sell them all day everyday.
This is the only thing different about a California AR vs one purchased anywhere else:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VseNzVcIjtc
