Whats wrong with a chamber brush on a Dewey rod?

Are you shooting steel casings that leak carbon blowback?

Yep standard chamber brush should do.

I must confess I have been shooting some steel case stuff, I did use a standard brush and Q-tips....Was curious if there was something that might make the job easier, like the magna-matic tool that has saved me a ton of AR cleaning time.

Used to be a guy here in Build it, and Maintenance (Quib), recommended soaking the BCG in Oderless Mineral Spirits mixed with CLP.

Ungodly number of questions asking 'what recipe?'.

He always said to experiment.  'Soak it while you're cleaning the rest of the gun.'

I took to soaking a small wad of patch or paper towel in the OMS/CLP and just plugging it into the chamber to soak the chamber and lugs.

Worked fine for me with a little aftercare with the chamber brush.

Thanks, Quib.  It was great reading your stuff.  You were a real book of knowledge on a ton of tech.

CLP ain't so good at dissolving crud, so use something more aggressive.  Carb cleaner may be indicated, depending on which steel stuff (Wolf?) you've been shooting and how many rounds you've fired.  Remember to ALWAYS apply something like CLP at least after carb or brake cleaner, because the cleaners strip EVERYTHING off the metal.

I don't mean to high-jack this thread, but Quib is no longer on this forum? He has been very helpful to me aswell.

Is your chamber chromelined if not youll have a bit harder time with carbon.Chamber brush bore cleaner always worked good for me now I just use slip2000 clp regular and EWL plus their carbone cleaner for everything...that magnamatic tool is awesome especially for the tail of the bolt.

He seems to have gotten tired of newbies and know-it-alls contradicting him, and exfil'd.

You guys gave him God like status for doing nothing more then cutting and pasting pictures from the -10 manual and the PM monthly comic book manuals for the M16.... something almost all of you have if you bought a new rifle (comes with one) or could easily download anywhere on the net.all of his stuff was dated info he got from the Army of the 80's

There not rockets.... it's a freakin rifle... read the manual and viola.....

Buy a couple of standard GI  8/32 thread chamber brushes. and  you can use them for the inside of the BCG as well.

Midway makes a nice 12" handle rod that you put a chamber brush on to clean the chamber. Highly recommend.

All this talk of steel cases, and carbon in the chamber......  I shoot pretty much only my 5.45 AR now, with the rusky surplus, which is the dirtiest stuff known to man, but I have never had a problem with carbon in the chamber, I normally shoot 250-300rds every trip.  Maybe it's the 5.45 and 5.56 case difference, but I normally have no problem, little hoppe's and a twirl with a patch.  The lugs, I get with the chamber brush, and the chamber stars I have.  Works wonders.

I'll give you that, I read the manuals when they came out.   But he was always there with a calm answer when some noob was paniced about something, He posted the same answers over/over for people who had no clue about search without bitching, much.  He rarely pissed in anyones cornflakes, and he generally kept the place civilized.  I did learn a couple of new/different ways/reasons for some things.  I think there should have been a bootcamp tech section for the noobs for him to run.

I have little carbon/soot problem in the chamber/lugs with 5.45 combloc milsurp.  I run it a little wet.

I've sworn off the .223/5.56 Golden Tiger.  It grouped OKAY, but the carbon it left behind was a bitch compared to the 5.45.  I have no clue why.  After that, I stopped putting steel case in the 5.56 altogether, and would rather find some reloadable brass 5.45, too.

Most folks are lazy by nature... no one wants to learn to fish anymore, they just want someone to hand them a fish.... All the info a new guy could ever want is either in the manual or in a tacked thread... but if the thread is longer then 2 pages, they would rather post a question (being lazy) instead of doing there homework and finding it themselves....and they might find that they actually LEARN something along the way.....

Hell, we got a guy who took a brand new AR to the range that Someone else disassembled/assembled for him and without so much as reading the manual that came with it, had problems and now there is a multiple page thread by him on how the AR sucks,.......that's a perfect example of what I'm talking about...

I use the head of the firing pin, a spent case, or a penny to clean the back of the bolt off. To clean the inside I have 2 nylon bottle cleaning brushes, one fits into the actual carrier and the other is small enough to clean out the little channel for the bolt. Both work like a charm followed by patches and qtips.
