Hello everyone, I’ve been a long time lurker and have learned a lot from reading here and would like to thank everyone for sharing their knowledge. I owned an AR-15 back in the 80’s and sold it (regret it). Now I’m looking to gt an M4 style rifle but things have really advanced from my day and I could really use some advice from you experts. I have two friends that both want to sell their rifles in order to buy another gun and I’m not sure which of these the better deal/rifle is. Here are my choices. I will be using the rifle for home defense.

First Rifle Choice

I have a nice CMMG SPR Midlength Gas, Medcon 18" 1 in 8 chromelined Bbl. Flattop AR that I have fired around 20 rds to zero in the scope that I would sell for $1000.00. (Scope not included) I also have a Swan 40L rear BUIS that I would give you with the rifle. It has the Ace Socom rear stock ($199. from Ace) I bought the CMMG new lower off of the FAL files, put the Socom stock on it and then ordered the complete Flattop SPR 1 in 8 upper from Cmmg . So it will come with 1 Rear BUIS (Swan 40L $140.)and 1 mag.

Second Rifle Choice - $1050.00

It has yankee hill diamond fluted 16 inch hb, 1 in 7 twist, yankee hill free floated handguard, flip up front sight, spikes tactical upper, superior arms lower, non rotating pins, magpul rear backup sight, moe stock and pistol grip yankee hill hang gaurd covers, bsa laser, arms mount cantilever red dot mount, Tasco Propoint 1x32mm 5 MOA Red Dot Rifle Scope PDTS132

If anyone can offer any advice I would be grateful. Thank you in advance.

Get both.

Do you want a fighting rifle or a Sniper type rifle?

If your budget is only a $1000.00 eaither would be good.

If you have a little more to spend there are much better options.

Colt 6920 for about 1200.00

Noveske N4 basic upper for 970.00 with free stripped lower. Add a good milspec stock and LPK and have another top tier rifle for 1200.00 or less.

Fighting type rifle. I have a FAL for longer work. Thank you for your input. However I am only looking for opinions between these two choices, not other recommendations. I appreciate your reply to my question however.

I say go with option 2.

Ditch the tasco sight and get an EOTech or Aimpoint.

Thanks for your input. I appreciate it. Just for my education, what makes you like the 2nd choice better? Are the upper and lower better? Or is the barrel better? Just wondering.  Thanks for the help making this choice.

I'm liking the shorter length of the second rifle for your stated purpose and also the 1/7 twist for heavier bullets (not really much difference with 1/7 vs 1/8 though).  Would also second going with an Eotech sight.  Both are nice guns.

Neither of them are very good choices for home defense unless you live in a 175 acre warehouse but I'd opt for #2 if I had to choose.

To be completely honest I think both are overpriced for what you're getting. I would much rather buy a brand-new Daniel Defense for $999 and get the free $250 accessory card.

There are a ton of better options than the ace socom stock and an 18" in not exactly ideal for a home defense gun in option 1.  As for option 2, the tasco scope along with the bsa laser is complete junk.

Buying the DD would also give you a better rail than the yankee hill option 2 comes with. It's your money though......

ditto. you can buy nicer newer stuff for those prices. go with the daniel defense...................
but a shotgun would be my choice for home protection. you just can't miss with one and you don't have to worry about where the bullets end up.

I also have to agree with what has been stated above..you can do a lot better for the cost of either option..

I agree with the above posts.  You can build new versions of what your two friends are offering for similar money, or buy an off the rack gun for the same money and have a warranty.  Personnally, I haven't seen a chrome lined 1/8 twist barrel  (not that they don't exist)- I've only seen that barrel twist in stainless guns.  The second gun with the YHM free float rail is easily duplicated at that price point by putting together a kit, although I'd probably skip the anti-rotation pins and spend that money on something else.  You can get a nice Bushmaster, Smith and Wesson, or any other number of AR's for 1k new right now.  The two options you list both appear to my to be kit guns, I've built many myself and you can do better assembling one new on your own.
For example, I've got a Delton chrome lined 1/7 twist M4 profile 16 inch upper, with  YHM free float on a Mega Lower with magpul CTR stock, ARMS 40L flip up rear sight, and I'm into this gun for about $900.

Albeit a qaulity rig I'm sure, no. 1 is not of a mainstram configuration. Not sure if you're just trying to help someone out finacially by ignoring options but as far as versatility a Colt 6920, Spikes M4 or even RRA Entry Tac would be a better choice for that kind of money.

When I said home defense, I actually meant property defense. My property is 1,300 feet long and 300 feet wide. Ten acres. So I would not be using it inside the house. Sorry for the lack of clarity.
I appreciate the replys.

Actually, using it for HD in the house is a good idea.

Contrary to what some posters think.

ETA- I agree with the DD option.
