Hello All,
This site is the motherlode!! Wow. I recently discovered one could build a CA legal AR. Don't ask what rock I have been under! So, with this new found knowledge I'm in the search for parts. I believe I have come down to either an SI Defense or Mega Machine lower. I like the idea of billet but not the price that goes with it. I really like the idea of matched upper/lower. Both of these outfits offer matched sets. I'm trying to put my wish list together, here is what I have come up with so far. 1.) Daniel Defense LPK...What's your recommendation? 2.) BCG....any suggestions? 3.) BCM mod 4 charging handle 4.) Magpul UBR stock, suggestions on buffer? 5.) MIAD pistol grip 6.) 18" barrel, 1-7 or 1-8 twist. Really need help on this one! 7.) YHM BUIS front and rear flip up. 8. YHM "smooth" hand guard. 9.) Almost forgot...Bullet Button, freakin CA. I'm sure there is stuff I missed bu it's a start. Comments and opinions are always welcome. This is a whole new level for me Thanks for looking. |

welcome to the site..it sounds like you're on the right path with the things you've listed..what would be you primary use for the AR? Thanks for the welcome. Primary use(enjoyment) will most likely be varmints. It's main purpose will be defense. I can see the usefulness of this rifle in a home defense situation. Thanks, |

Thanks, The problem is there is a big difference between varmint rifles and home defense rifles, primarily the barrel and optic. For a varmint rifle, and 18", possibly stainless steel, would be a good choice with a magnified scope. For a home defense rifle, a 16" or shorter barrel would be best with a non-magnified red dot sight. 1:7 or 1:8 should both suffice for your applications. If you plan to shoot lighter bullets (less than 55 gr), I may lean towards the 1:8. As for the BCG, I'd go BCM all the way regardless of what type of rifle it's going in. The buffer you choose will primarily be a function of the gas system length you go with; if you choose mid-length, a standard CAR buffer will be optimal, if carbine length system then I'd go for an H-buffer unless you plan on shooting underpowered ammo, then I'd go CAR buffer. Buffers can also be purchased from Bravo. Stocks are more of a personal preference item. For a varmint, you want something that will provide a nice consistent comfortable cheek-weld, I prefer a fixed A2 stock for precision shooting, the Magpul PRS is an awesome stock but it's expensive and relatively heavy. For home defense whatever collapsible stock you like best will be fine. DD LPKs are fairly new, hhaven;t heard much about them, but I'd imagine they're quality based on that mfrs reputation.. Magpul MIAD is my favorite grip, but this again is a personal preference item. Charging handles are charging handles IMO, I'd wouldn't spend more than $25 on a standard BCM CH. For BUIS, I prefer Troy. If I were you I'd focus on a defensive rifle for now, it will provide you the most versatility, and then think about building a second rifle set-up for varminting. |

Hi Captains1911,
Thanks for all the info. The reasoning behind the 18" barrel as double duty. I really don't have long distances to shoot. I am in the mountains north of Tahoe. Lot's of big pines. Most of the time deer hinting one could get away with iron sights. I figured I could get a scope and a red dot and just interchange. I'm working on finding a dealer near me that is willing to get the lower. The one I thought would do it asked for a letter from the DA saying that the bullet button was acceptable!! The things we have to go through here. Thanks again for your help and suggestions. |
